Title: Derby Day 200 — 1979 limited edition commemorative ice bucket - ID = Orrefors
Post by: Bernard C on February 25, 2012, 08:12:42 PM
See the first of six images here: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-16005

Nice crisp engraving.   Minor inaccuracies such as the horses are slightly too chunky and some of the stirrups are much too long.   I doubt whether the 1979 Epsom Derby, held, I understand, on 6th June, was flag started, so this engraving might have been inspired by the first Derby in 1780.

As you will see from the final image, the piece is signed under the starter's flag "A. O. 35/200".   I wondered whether the "O" might be a clue, as there a lot of Os in the Irish phone book.   Certainly Waterford made crystal ice buckets in modern times.

Any ideas on maker / engraver?

Thanks for your interest,

I also asked a knowledgeable dealer about it yesterday morning at Cambridge, and he said that those handles were OK for Orrefors.   We sold it an hour or two later.   So the link you found, Anne, looks fine.   Grateful thanks for your effort in finding it — you're better at Googling than me!

Please would you amend the title of this topic to show the attribution as I've done on this reply, and move the topic to the Scandinavian glass forum.   TIA.

Thanks, Anne.

One further query, which has come to mind after selling it!

You will notice that there are two blocks of engraving.   One goes round three quarters of the bucket and the other fills in the remaining space with a small gap each side.   A clever design feature which allows for the two gaps to be made approximately equal quite easily as you can see both ends of the long block from the opposite side.   Is this imbalance in the size of two blocks of engraving seen on other Orrefors pieces?

Was the mark-up for engraving applied by tranfer?
