Title: Cambridge Glass Fair 2012.~Brilliant weather, brilliant glass, brilliant day!
Post by: rosieposie on February 27, 2012, 08:11:00 PM
I was lucky enough to get to the Cambridge Glass Fair yesterday.  The weather was wonderful,  the glass exquisite and the people were warm, friendly and so enthusiastic. My only glitch was my camera that decided to go into 'Zoom' mode unasked,  so the last few stands in the big hall didn't get filmed.....I do hope someone will come up with other pictures to complete the record.

Did I buy anything??

Yes,  two ellies, a cockerel and an eagle.....pictures to follow when the camera is fixed!!

Rosie, do contact Paul and Christina and tell them you have taken these photos.  (Christina asked me if we had taken any this time.  We usually do, but this time we didn't have our cameras, so there are just a few pics on Jonathan's phone.)  If you are willing, I'm sure they would love to see these!

Hi Leni.  lovely to meet you yesterday.......and to learn how to pronounce your name properly.
Which Paul, and which Christina?  Let me know and I will happily let them know.

Rosie, thank you!  :kissy:  It's lovely to see what I've missed once more!

Seriously, though, thanks, it looks like a super day.

For anyone who wants to look at Rosie's pics easily, there is a little-known feature of the GlassGallery, called Slideshow. This means you can watch the pics without having to click your way through each of them: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?album=956&pid=16041&slideshow=5000 (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?album=956&pid=16041&slideshow=5000)

Hi Rosie,

Thank you for posting your photos taken at the fair on Sunday. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your visit and found some pieces to take home with you.

Hope to see you in September.

Paul and Christina.

Aha!  That Paul and Christina!!  Well THANK YOU,  it was a lovely day.....I was just so sorry that my camera decided to die on me.  I never did get to take a picture of the wonderful glass in the Foyer....it was too crowded round it when I arrived and when it was clearer at going home time,  the camera was dead.
I spent far to much,  and now I have to buy a new camera as well.....this one will cost more to mend than replace!!
It was lovely to meet you too Nigel........now I just wonder which piece of glass you mean....are you biased by any chance??

JP,  thank you for introducing me to so many lovely people, and for the glass of water....nice to meet you at last and allow me to buy you lunch!!

Anne,  is it worth addidng that clever slideshow link to the start of this thread to save everyone trudging through the whole lot first?  If so,  please feel free to do so.

Anik, as soon as the camera is replaced or mended I will send you pics of my purchases...promise. :)

Thanks ever so much for all these, Rosie - I always find taking pics gets in the way of being there and looking at the things in reality, rather than via a camera screen!

I'm very curious about a piece on this stand - has anybody any idea whose it is?

Hi Sue....I had all the time in the world,  so I got the best of both worlds, time to look and enjoy and time to take pics for those who couldn't attend or didn't have a camera, so I was very blessed there.
The only blot on the day was the fact that my camera started playing up towards the end and I couldn't get it out of Zoom mode....I was just so relieved when I got home to find that the pictures weren't lost!!. John has fixed it now,  so girls, marry an engineer, they are worth their weight in gold.
I really haven't had time to  put a caption to the pictures, and as you say, if I had tried to do it 'press photography' style, I wouldn't have had time to just stop and look and enjoy as well.
I am sure that someone else who was there will know whos stand it was....it was in the great hall near the top end. Which piece were you specially interested in Sue?
I took these particularly because I know there are some of you who collect and like Mdina/ IOW glass. I tried to do a bit of everything, and when I have time,  I will try to caption some of them.....time?  where does it go??

That, I believe, was stand 20, belonging to Peter Elliot.

I think you are right,Dan,  I have just had a look at the floor plan and it was stand 20....so Peter Elliot it is!!

There are some pictures of Exbor pieces that confirmed the locaton.

There you are Sue....

I NEVER have enough time at fairs!
Not enough time to see all the glass I want to, not enough time to catch up with all those I want to catch up with, not enough time to spend with new folk I meet and.... just never, ever enough time.

My interest is piqued by a Malta Decorative Glass attenuated bottle with label. It's amber, and I want a green one, but I'm still curious about it. There's a labelled stoppered bottle too, but I have one of those (minus label, but that doesn't worry me)
It's really good to see MDG out on stand, proudly being what it is - not being some sort of almost-maybe-Mdina.

I should have known!
Trust Peter. He's WAY ahead of things, he is.
(he used to tease me for collecting Mdina, he did, then I discovered he'd been collecting it too  >:D )

Post by: Greg. on February 28, 2012, 12:01:46 PM
I had a look at the MDG pieces in the photo, Peter Elliot mentioned he thought he would give them a try to see how they went down, apparently there's a shortage of early Mdina  ;)

I did contemplate purchasing the MDG bottle, although I ended up being swayed by other bits and pieces.

Post by: chopin-liszt on February 28, 2012, 12:11:30 PM
The stoppered bottle or the attenuated one, Greg?
I've been collecting MDG for a good wee whiley now, originally thinking it was Mdina, although I had managed to "attribute" the MDG pieces as belonging together. I didn't think they were by MH, but I did think they all were made by the same, highly experienced person whose "hand" I came to recognise.

The green stuff is the best!

There's a shortage of early Mdina?  :thud:  That's 'cos John's hoovered it.  :smg:

The attenuated one Sue. Certainly, nice to see a few pieces of MDG around.

I'll let you know if I see any green MDG attenuated bottles on my travels.

I have seen one - it's on the Worthpoint site.
I don't have any attenuated bottles in MDG and I do like them.
We are getting a bit off-topic here, though.  :pb:
I will consider starting a new thread.

Thanks for those pictures Leni.....I didn't get to meet you all on the W/F stand,  but I did buy an elephant from aa that he had put some of Ray Annenberg's Whiteriars canes in....it is so pretty and will go to my new Grandaughter when I pop my clogs!  I also bought a beautiful dark blue ellie as well from aa that will go to my Grandson......he is nearly nine and already showing an interest in glass.  I give him a piece now and then and his little face lights up.....nice to see him appreciate the art when he is so young.

That's a LOT of work Rosie - thank you so much for doing it so we can all share!

Pic 33/70 is a bit by Mike Hunter. Ron is including Mike's amazing work in his repertoire of top artists.

carrying on, I suspect the fabby filigrano owl with canes for eyes might be Mike Hunter too - in a pic called pwt row.

File 17/70 shows work by glass artist Carrie Anne Funnell rather than by Robert Marris who sells antique drinking glasses etc.

Thank you very much Christina....correction made.  Isn't it a wonderful piece?  What I would give for that on my wall.... such talent from Carrie Anne Funnell and indeed everyone else that exhibited.

I do hope someone managed to photograph the Foyer cabinets....by the time the crowds around them had dispersed, my camera had given up the ghost.

And this is a lovely opportunity to thank you and Paul for organizing such a fantastic day. Can't wait for the next one.

The file numbers change, depending on how you're sorting the images: by date, filename, ascending, descending etc... so what one person sees as 17/70 will be totally different to another. The only way to ensure that you are indicating one image is to stop the slideshow and copy the URL in the File Info panel BELOW the photo. That URL is unique to that image, so it doesn't matter where it is in the GlassGallery it will show that image. You can move the image from one album to another and that URL below the image will always find it. :)

Hi Otis,  the good news....the prices seemed fair and negotiable. The sellers are a very friendly bunch,  many of them being members of the GMB,  I bought two ellies both signed, a beautiful Finnish Eagle again signed, and an M Janku ZBS Cockerel, unsigned,  but unmistakable in a neodymium and pink glass.
The bad news.......it's all over until the next one!! But that's not too long.  :smg:
