Title: St Louis or Baccarat possibly? salt or small posy white opaline applied wide rim
Post by: flying free on March 01, 2012, 01:48:26 PM
I posted this on a previous thread but thought I'd give it it's own showing  :)
I think it is exactly the same opaline as a cake stand I have but the applied rim is 1.5cm wide and is  the most amazing piece of glasswork (imho).
I think this is mid 19th century.

Looks like pate-de-riz from the mid-century. No idea who might have made it though. Somehow I doubt if Saint-Louis did this cheaper material - they were most traditional and quality conscious and would have opted for the full opaline formula.

Clichy did pate-de-riz according to this

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=KEYMY4_ytuUC&pg=PA258&lpg=PA258&dq=clichy+pate+de+riz&source=bl&ots=pTpIsfIS3i&sig=0eoAA_HFxqlNRyGTwHhRFKuWB6Y&hl=en&sa=X&ei=IJVPT4S2ENTJ8gPeu6jwBQ&ved=0CC0Q6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=clichy%20pate%20de%20riz&f=false

And my Baccarat perfume bottle was very similar as well.

Were they in a different league to St Louis in terms of quality etc at that time?

I do think it is a very nicely made piece  :-\  it could be my photos making it look a lot coarser than it actually is.

I have no permission from google effing books to see that page - maybe something to do with their impossible new policies which were introduced today. Clichy did pdr i know - but having seen the SL museum in Bitche (wotsin aname) at least three times i find it improbable that saint-louis ever did pate-de-riz. Never say never though.  Baccarat made some dire stuff mid-century - i have examples that would stand your hair on end and which they would flatly deny.

;D good job I didn't splash out an arm and a leg for it and that I bought it because I loved it.
I honestly I don't think it is bad :)
I wish my comporte wasn't damaged.  I might settle for not looking for another piece if that one was whole.

I'm also locked out of something I can normally get into via google  :grrr:..I have no idea why.
