Title: Is this a Mdina perfume bottle?
Post by: Nemmie on March 02, 2012, 03:45:48 PM
I think it is but I have not seen this colouring before so any guidance appreciated.

It's 6.5 inches in height. Unsigned obviously.

Looks like Malta Decorative Glass to me, not Mdina

I think Christine is spot on, good size, nice to have a stopper too.

Definitely Malta Decorative Glass.  :smg:

From your reaction, Nemmie, you don't seem overly impressed, but you should be!

MDG is a very short-lived company, set up (basically) by the Maltese Govt. after Michael Harris left Mdina. They had seen how successful Mdina had been and wanted to copy the whole notion. It was financed by the Maltese Govt in conjunction with some Chinese investors, and Vicente Boffo was told if he wished to stay on the island, he must go and work at MDG, training apprentices from scratch, as Michael Harris had at Mdina.

We've not managed to find out how exactly how long (or how short) this company ran.
The items are quite distinctive from Mdina, once you know the differences!  :usd:

Well, I am impressed as I do like it but I am not impressed as I don't have a MDG shelf. :)

Thanks for all the information, very interesting. I shall have to add another shelf!

Following Wolfie's discovery that Vicente Boffo stayed at Mdina until '77, we can assume that's when it started.
If you look at Rosieposie's pics of Cambridge, you'll find I got all excited about seeing a couple of great bits of labelled MDG on Peter Elliot's stand.
Here's a pic of a few bits of MDG, (photographer; John.)
A couple may have been made at Mdina, perhaps the fish and the lollipop, maybe even the unknopped chalice, but having ascertained this is Vicente Boffo's personal style, because of MDG, his work at Mdina can be easily identified.

Here's my bits (http://www.lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/thumbnails.php?search=malta+decorative&submit=search&album=search&title=on&newer_than=&caption=on&older_than=&keywords=on&type=AND). The squat bottle and the amber globe live with Sue now

And the big Earthtones globe at the back was another gift from you, while your Earthtones chimney vase lived here for a while!

Some of us have been paying a lot of attention to MGD, it's pretty wonderful stuff! :smg:
(Will have to get pics of my green stuff, I have accumulated a little more since John was with me.)

Was it? Are you sure?  :-\

Ummm, no? It was the big globe at the front you gave me!
It was a very long time ago, possibly before we discovered it was MDG rather than Mdina, and you knew it was the style (ie what we now know to be Boffo) of Mdina that I was trying to concentrate on.

Would you like it back now we know more about it? You weren't collecting Maltese glass at the time, but I know you are now, and I have my first globe. I don't need two, and you did do the finding of it, the thinking of me and the subsequent donation!  :ghug:

Nah. Still think you're confuddled. I think.  :ghug:

Oddly I found the double of this today and with matching stopper.

I also found a tall one last week in the same pattern, I will add a picture later.

Oh and the tall one has a label :)

The splodging on the tall vase is a lot thicker but it is splodging not one consistent colour as it looks in the photo.

This particular cloudy splodging is another typical Boffo feature. These tall stoppered bottles are fabby - I've got an amber one, and yellow one and a blue one - all cloudy splodgy.
I'e also got this shape, slightly bigger, in Earthtones-as-executed-by-Boffo, and, one of my prize possessions, a tall green one!

Sorry the pic is a bit dodgy - this is the blue one and the yellow one, beside a massive big blue one (massive being tall AND wide)

Lovely blue in those. Very nice.

MDG has definitely grown on me and it seems to gravitate towards me as well, which is an added bonus!

The yellow seems to be the cloudy colour least often found - that's the only bit I know of.
I've got a massive green one too, lucky, lucky me!
