Hi, great to have the gmb back :-* have been going cold turkey lol
ok, so I am puzzling over these two pieces of glass, purchased together and superficially similar in colour although there is a slight difference.
Not finding much out at the moment so was hoping for a few pointers if anyone would care to comment
This is the vase, its opaque (reminds me of milk jelly) and stands 6 and a half inches tall, the base has a ground and polished pontil - quite deeply set

thanks again, Mel

Pretty - I like it. It looks like opaline glass to me though not satin glass (which looks frosted or like incredibly fine sandpaper lol). Perhaps you should change your title to include opaline, if it is?

That is indeed pink opaline, and I think it originated in Italy (either Murano or Empoli). But I've been surprised before LOL. This may have been a tumble-up - which means a matching tumbler has existed which fits over the top to get you though thirsty nights.
-
It reminds me of this, which has a ground but not polished pontil mark

thank you for such quick replies! I will be back later but I have an urgent appointment with the tea which is apparently burning :-(
-
Subject line tweaked for you Mel.

I would respect your judgment any day Ivo, but find it hard to believe that this would be a 'tumble up' with a neck that thin - wouldn't the 'guest carafe' have a much wider neck, usually? :)
-
Possibly - but it does not have to be standing on the base, sometimes it is a short tumbler which hangs from the flange.
-
See if the inside of the neck is ground to take a stopper. I think mine is. It's possibly a bit small heightwise for a tumble-up

thanks again for the replies so far, just a flying visit but in reply to Christine no, I dont think the neck looks as if it is ground for a stopper but it is so narrow I can barely get my little finger in for a proper feel and when washing it (it was really filthy on arrival) you can hardly get the water back out again the neck is so narrow - so that probably discounts a guest carafe too.
many thanks
