Title: Large French Vase - Schneider? or ??
Post by: obscurities on April 10, 2012, 08:13:37 PM
Another purchase today when I went to get the other vase I posted. Mold blown with no pontil and a ground polished rim. The decor and color combination remind me strongly of Schneider pieces I have seen previously. It is marked on the underside "France" as seen in the pic.  The mark appears to have been applied with a stencil, and etched in a manner which resembles sand blasting.  A stately piece measuring 12.25 inches tall and approx 4.75 in diameter at the thickest portion near the base. Age appropriate wear on the underside. Random small bubbles in the glass, and the colors are a little more translucent than they appear in the image. Top is a mottled burnt orange, and the bottom fades into what looks like a deep purple/burgundy with the orange....  Nicely executed and a quality piece of glass.

Looking for help on this one for sure.....

TIA,
Craig

Hi, lovely vase.  I don't know how complete this article is, but it seems fairly comprehensive and seems to indicate that all Schneider pieces were signed.  It does say that some had enamelled signatures and implies these could wear off.  It also states that some pieces were marked France.  Probably of little help but some interesting info.

Thanks M,  An interesting read......  Not one of my strong areas of knowledge.....  but I know good glass when I see it, even if I do not know who did it....   ;D

Thanks Miranda.....

Same shape. Same mark.

I was told on another forum that this is a Schneider piece by someone who owns a Schneider piece signed like this.....  by photographic comparison, the signature mark on mine is exactly the same as the mark I was provided an image of and also appears to be like the other one in the other posting.....

The finish on the rim of mine has no bevel on the edges at all. It is ground flat and polished quite well......

Interesting finish for the rim.  I've read various comments about Schneider (no idea whether or not any of them are correct of course).  One of which was that they did not do cut rims.  Another was that they did do cut rims on their table wear pieces. Another was that table wear is never signed.
I'm interested because I have a bowl that looks as though it could be Schneider the way the colour is done.  However it has a cut, polished and bevelled rim.  I have just bought another via online that hasn't arrived yet, because it looks to be the same decor as the one I have.  Apparently the new one has a firepolished rim (although I'm not entirely sure the person I asked is reliable on that) and it is signed.  I'm waiting for it to arrive to see if it is the same range/decor etc as the one I already have.  And also to see if the signature is a fake or not of course  ;D

Adding to your info and disputing what I have read about Schneider not doing cut and polished rims, in Miller's Collectables 2012-2013 there is a large orange mottled Schneider vase acid etched signed, with a 'machine-cut and polished collar rim'.

In the Schneider book by Joulin & Maier this signature is reproduced and dated 1920...1929 (page 81).
