I thought it was Holmegaard when I picked it up. The base has a highly polished pontil.
I found a match here: http://coins.bidstart.com/Holmegaard-Glass-Smoked-Decanter-and-4-Glasses-/20782120/a.html but the attribution from a 'pottery and glass sellers' association' member - but they don't give a design number or attribute a designer.
The other thing I thought was that it looked like a bud vase as there was no stopper or any roughness suggesting there had ever been a stopper. Would this technically not make it a carafe?
Any help to confirm or correct what I have found would be greatly appreciated. AsI stated above, knowing the designer, style number etc would be nice.

It was not made by Holmegaard and it never had a stopper. ;D
It is a carafe designed by Ronald Stennett Willson for Wuidart, it will have been made in Sweden by Björkshult and sold over here. They were sold with seven tumblers, one served as a cover for the carafe. Designed in 1954 and made 1955-7. All information is from Millers 20th Century Glass by Andy McConnell (page 227).

That's an expensive book but I might need to take the plunge quite soon. I appreciate you sharing the info. Very generous of you. Would you mind sharing the guide price?

In that case it is the smaller of the two sizes made, the other being 7.5 inches tall. The guide price is twenty five quid, for what it is worth.
The price of the book on the secondary market is still :o but it was twice that a while ago, perhaps it prompted a few extra copies to be offered for sale. It was 30 quid when new but now is out of print, which reinforces the point: buy them when they are published.....
At the time I wish I had forked out the 50 quid for his book on decanters, the asking is now :o 250 :o .

Cheers for that tip too John. If I'm to stop relying on the good nature of others to ID my glass I need more than the Hajdamach book I have. It's useful but only for British stuff.
How comprehensive is the McConnell book?

It covers a range of makers and a few designers, as a result it gives just a taster for each. A useful book which has plenty of photos. See if you can get it from your local library (likely via an inter library loan), then you can judge whether you think it is worth the outlay.

...looks like i need new wallpaper...

Amazing to find it with all seven glasses, as it still has it's label it was probably never used, or at least never washed. ;D
