Title: Quiz - what use for this group?
Post by: Paul S. on April 13, 2012, 08:01:50 PM
Apologies that not all pieces from this set are glass.   There is a motif on the tops of the small dish, lidded container and lid of glass tube, which would possibly give the game away, although don't think this can be seen in the picture.    No great quality - the metal pieces are EPNS  -  very singular and unusual use, and may date from the '20's or '30's possibly, but that doesn't have any bearing on the answer.   They are contained in an inexpensive, smallish rectangular box, and the origin is almost certainly the UK, but the use of such a set would be universal, and similar pieces are still used.       So, what are these things used for.........? :)

everyone lost their tongue, or is it too late at night?           Off to bed now, and up at 6 for the boot sale  -  back at about 11 ish in the morning, when I shall expect a barrage of (wrong) answers. ;D

is the dish for mixing the contents of the two containers?  and does it have to involve all 4 glasses or does it just happen that  you have 4?

Well,  Keith actually, as he gave a very heavy clue....shall we share the glory Keith?

I believe Paul is offering a trip for two to the A3 bootfair for the winner!! No expense spared!! ;D

sighs heavily - underestimated the ingenuity of GMB members, obviously :).......yes, Keith did start the ball rolling and so shares the prize with Rosie.           Suppose it wasn't difficult, but I don't recall seeing a set before.           In fact the guy I boutht these from told me it was for peforming the 'last rites' ;D       I'll see anyone at the A3 boot sale, which has now started again, I believe (but I can't make tomorrow).         I was down at Ford (Sussex U.K.) this morning, near Arundel, definitely a high class boot sale and very large, but prices can be a tad rich for my liking.

We is kool,  isn't we Paul?
Arundel is a long way to go for a boot fair.....come to the one at Bordon,  big enough to be interesting. small enough to get round, and affordable.  Sunday mornings all year round.  We are going tomorrow (weather permitting).  It is held at Country markets......worth a visit.

Bordon is in Hant. is it not  -  so would still be a long journey for me  -  although I appreciate not for you.         I don't mind distances so much, but need motorways or 'A' roads to make up the speed - otherwise I spend too long driving and then get bored stuck behind caravans and tractors, in the country.           I'll try and make it to Bordon one Sunday in the summer to give the yokels a once over. ;D    Will let you know when I'm coming (as the Bisho...........) and we can meet for a coffee).

P.S.   Will probably get shot for adding the pic. of this morning's finds -  but.........
The hexagonal bowl carries Rd. No. 810280 - for Feb. '36 and registered to United Glass Bottle Co. - sure I've seen a pic of it in one of the books, but can't recall where.    It has relief images of scenes of a kingfisher around the outside.
The 'Jade' vase might be Davidson, but looks a little pale possibly, for theirs.
Biscuit barrel carries a diamond Rd., but haven't yet deciphered it  -  but what a bonus that it has the lid (so often missing)
The cut whiskey is W/Corbet, and is the first I've seen with the backstamp containing a 'star' in the middle, indicating made somewhere between '49 and '52.    Seems less common than examples with a 'T' or 'S'.
The clear apple came boxed, and has the Wedgwood backstamp, plus slightly faded label.
The blue-bowled sherry may in fact be a modern repro - I can't find any wear, and it stands wonky :(
But it's the amber tumblers I'm unsure of........they shout Thomas Webb, with the right sort of ground/polished pontil, flared lip, sort of quilited/chevron/interlocking diamond pattern  -  but no marks unfortunately, and no 'ring' to speak of.        What do people think?
If anyone wants a better pic of anything in pariticular, it can be arranged :)

just found the pic. of the bowl  -  it's in Hajdamach (C20 British Glass) page 185  -  presumably all examples made in bottle brown glass.
Apologies for all this waffle Anne - and bearing in mind this is almost certainly all 'British', might suggest you throw the whole thing over into that category.    thanks.

OK,  I concede....that lot was worth a trip to Arundel.....for certain!

Bordon....A3, throught the new tunnel,  off at Grayshott and 5 mins drive.....simples!!

Coffee always served hot on the Pearce Café 'twixt Grayshott and Bordon.

Must be worth the trip before the 'summer seething masses' hit the road to the Olympics!!??

according to Thompson, the biscuit jar is Sowerby - first registered in 1874 (the pic. is on page 59).

the GMB will descend on the Pearce cafe en masse, if we can all get together on the same day ;D

I shall stay miles away from the Olympics, sorry to be a killjoy, but heaving sweaty masses blocking up the roads are not my scene  -  although I dare say they would say the same of glass ;)

Just occured to me...............sincerely hope that having divulged my favourite haunts for collecting, that I don't now see GMB members lurking in Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Kent or south London.   These really are my territories, and it just wouldn't be cricket if future lean pickings were the result of people taking advantage of my giving out details of these hot spots.  ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;D

trust you had a great day though Keith  -  it's the fun of rummaging through boxes, and the hope of finding good things, unexpectedly, that makes for excitement.   Hope you enjoy the May event :)

I am so envious of all the fairs you guys have down south.  Are they mostly outdoor?  Maybe I'm wrong (I'm sure Sue will know) but we just don't have regular fairs like that up here.  Possibly the weather is a factor, but it rains in England too doesn't it?  I would just LOVE to browse around one of those places - you all seem to find something worth dipping into your pockets for.  Charity shops are OK, fine in fact, but there's no real buzz about them that I expect you get at a fair.  Sigh *

evening Nancy..........well, actually no, apparently it doesn't seem to rain in the south of England any more :)  -  as you've probably seen on the box most if not all of the south east has drought conditions and there is a hosepipe ban - but a deluge of rain should really take precedence over boot sales, no matter how much I'd probably moan.       It's true, there are some major fairs south of Watford ;), although possibly what makes more of a difference are the very large and munificent outdoor boot sales, which provide a good selection of antique bric-a-brac and house clearance material.      Do visit us Sassenachs, and you can stay in my large shed, and we can visit some good boot sales.... :)
On the other hand, I've enjoyed the beauty of Talisker Bay, climbed to the top of Schiehallion, and experienced the isolation of Rannock Moor......none of which can be done in Surrey, so no one gets all the goodies.

Sorry you can't make Brum in May Keith, I'm going this time, and you could have bought me a drink ;)     Won't change your mind?

Apologies this is getting a little of course, so better stop this thread here.

There are a couple of static antique centres in Scotland - no fairs at all. Boots and flea markets are also very thin on the ground.

I know Rannoch Moor, Paul, and I've climbed Shiehallion myself, but I don't know where Rannock comes in - are you getting muddled with bannock?
We had hailstorms yesterday.
Damp hangs in the air.... when it's not moving around rapidly in the gales!

you're quite right of course, Sue, big goof on my part, and thanks for pointing it out  -  it's rare that I make a mistake ;)...............just testing to see if you'd spot the deliberate mistake, obviously senility creeping in..... :-[

 ;)

It was around tea-time - perhaps hunger drove you to think of bannocks.....?
