Title: PY cane. Is this genuine?
Post by: Nemmie on May 03, 2012, 02:08:11 PM
The only things I know about paperweights are what I have read in passing on this forum. I stumbled across this paperweight today and noticed it has a PY cane. Is it real Ysart? If so what period?

It does have base wear commensurate with some age and the glass has a bluish tinge which my camera can't seem to handle, so apologies for the less than great pictures.

Measures 6.8cm across and 8.2 cm in height.

Hi.

It looks like a genuine Paul Ysart, and the colour tinge of the glass suggests to me it is 1930s - 1940s. (The colour is from the manganese in the glass mix, which is used to remove the natural green tinge from iron in the sand.  If there is a little too much manganese in the mix, and especially if the weight is exposed to sunlight, then over time this tinge appears. It happens to some Bohemian weights too.)

Agreed - genuine PY weight.

For reference, genuine PY canes can be seen in my web page (http://www.btinternet.com/~kevh.glass/pages/paul-ysart/signed/canetable.htm) (part of a larger article)

False "py" canes can be seen in another of my pages (http://www.btinternet.com/~kevh.glass/pages/fake-py/fake-py-weights.htm).

That is great. Thank you both for your help and the extra information which was very interesting.

I can certainly see why people collect these items as it is a lovely piece of work.
