I bought this little pink duck quite a while ago - and have no idea of its origin. (bought from Uk) It is rather a pale pink - and opaque - not clear.
Yesterday I was re-doing my glass cabinet - took out all the glass birds and ducks and replaced them with paperweights. When I looked at this duck which had been put down near a fluorescent globed lamp - it had gone grey.
I am familiar with the Neodymium pink/blue colour change glass, but have never seen anything like this before. Does anyone know what causes it? and does it have a name??
I am intrigued!

Has anyone seen anything like this before

Hi Jackie, I thought it was a fascinating colour change and did hope someone would answer your question... Could it be manganese? Then again, I'd expect that to turn a dull green, not grey.
Hopefully someone who knows will reply. :)

Thanks Anik. I could not believe my eyes when I saw it -it is very odd, and must have a cause!

Looks like you've got everyone (so far) stumped. I hope someone comes up with the answer too.

It's surely a "dichoric" glass color, likely containing the chemical Erbium.

Thank you James - not something I have ever heard of before. I Googled it and found this linkhttp://erbiumfacts.com/ (http://erbiumfacts.com/)
looks like the right thing.
Erbium mainly mined in Sweden and China - I expect they export it too - so I suppose this duck could have come from anywhere.
Do you know (without getting too technical!) why the colour changes under fluoro lights?
