Title: Is this vase by Aseda or another glassworks?
Post by: glassobsessed on May 07, 2012, 06:16:42 PM
It is a substantial beast and I thought Aseda when I bought it but I can not find another. It stands 24.5cm tall, has a mottled orange colour and moulded concave base.

All help gratefully received...

John

Ooh thank you Kieran, I will look into that when I have time over the weekend. I had got it into my head that it 'looked Swedish' but Czech seems possible too now that you mention it. It has the look of Frantisek Koudelka about it but I am exhausted after an early start and long motorway drive and anything seems possible in this state!

John, I don't think it's Czech.  It looks Polish to me...  :-\

I'm not ruling anywhere out Anik (thank you for those images of similar polish glass btw). This shape seems quite 'futuristic space age' to me, the sort that was popular post Sputnik, late 50s and on into the sixties I guess.

All I can add about it at present is that it is very heavy, well made and has a 'quality feel'.

Zbigniew Horbowy designed some similar items:

http://www.kano-art.pl/product_info.php?products_id=3106

According to Barbara Banas' book, Horbowy was very fond of ruby and amber -- he felt it was a great contrast to the greyness of the communist world he lived in at the time.

Though I haven't any proof, my gut still says Polish.  Very good quality Polish.  :)

Bold design from Horbowy, thank you Anik (managed to id another vase while looking at the other items, a friend has one of these with the acid finish: http://www.kano-art.pl/product_info.php?products_id=2372&language=en ).
