Couldn't resist this little ellie, although he was found covered outside and inside in what looked like years of grime. Weighing only 23g and 4½" in length in total and 2½" high. His eyes and tusks are opalescent. He's not like the Bimini ones I've seen. Can anyone shed any light on him please?
TIA ;D

Hi Anne,
Both Nemmie and I have got similar elephants which you can see in this thread: Thin glass hollow elephant (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,39836.0.html)
Unfortunately, they're unknowns. Maybe someone will know more now?
Here's a (poor) picture of mine.

Thank you Anik. They look as though they might be related.
I don't usually like glass animals, but I've made an exception with my little ellie who's made himself at home amongst my paperweights :-)
-
The second elephant is a Mampe elephant :-) It's a bottle
I believe I know the maker but am waiting for confirmation from Mampe.
-
Oh my, how exciting! Thank you very much for the information, Coupsdestylo.
I didn't know what or who Mampe was, so I looked it up and found the same elephant as mine on Etsy (but with alcohol and label still included). Would you know what time period it comes from? Is it the 1960s?
Really lovely that you could help (at least one of us). Much appreciated!
Anik :)

If it's what I think it might be then could be as old be pre war. I'll let you know if I get a response from the Mampe museum.

Did you find this link Anik? http://www.minibottlelibrary.com/mbl/alpha/mampe/ (http://www.minibottlelibrary.com/mbl/alpha/mampe/) I'm guessing it will be a longer lasting link than an Etsy listing and what an impressive site it is for bottles.

Hi Anik, I have had a response from the Mampe museum last thing friday, they didn't know the maker, will see what they think and let you know if more comes of it.

Ah, thank you D! I'm sure that with time, more answers will come. I really appreciate your help.
Alastair, I didn't see that link before... a really lovely site for bottles (and the elephant). Thank you!
Anik :)

You're right Anik and more than welcome! Although I didn't expect the time to be so short, Mampe confirmed production started pre war :-) I'm not saying yours is.
I think I may end up doing an article on this, there's quite a story to tell with David Bowie a hot dog and a baby elephant!

I hope you do write an article... let us know if you do, please.

Hi, it was made by the company Jostra. Fritz Reeg, the husband of Josephs sister Ida, may well have been the glassblower, production started pre war and continued afterwards. The schnapps elephant for Mampe is explicitly mentioned in the life and works of the Traut brothers.

Super information, D! Thank you so much.

Nice one Frank, the odds are good that this elephant is by Max Traut. Most of the bottles on that page are his.
cheers

Max traut born 1900 the 8th son started work in 1919, traded as Matra Original 1933-55 among other names.
"The eighth son Max born 1900 had founded his own glass workshop by 1919 making hand blown perfume bottles, he attracted the connoisseurs of the glass world with his new product ranges of vases and bowls in the forms of snakes and animals and single bloom vases."
you were spot on with the other post Frank all the brothers were trained scientific glassblowers of the highest standard. The quality of their work led to one of their companies setting the standard for scientific glass.

Thanks for that, do remind if I have not got that adjusted in a few months... lots to be done.

Anne yours is a RYNBENDE elephant still don't know who made it sorry, I would guess by the same person who made the BOLS elephants with downwards trunks, you should find some labeled examples online. Anik I would love to acquire yours to sit amongst my other Jostra items if you could ever bare to part with it please consider me.

Hi, it has been interesting reading this thread. I just wanted to share my "pink" elephant with opal tusks and ears and red eyes.
I am told that he was made by Max Traut. He is 3 1/4" tusk to tail and 3 1/4" foot to top of trunk. He is filled with perfume and bears two labels - Made in France and Lilas (not Lilac). Typically, the Made in France refers to the perfume, I believe. If someone has more information on this perfume bottle, I would appreciate it. I have also attached a page from a Max Traut catalog with an elephant similar to mine.
Thanks.
