Title: Pair of Victorian Jugs with applied Foliage - Possible S&W or Czech ..?
Post by: Greg. on June 06, 2012, 04:18:59 PM

Trying to find out a little more info on this pair of Victorian opaline jugs with frilled rim and applied foliage which extends down from the end of handle.

Cased in amber over white glass, with the amber graduating downwards to white. Ground concave pontil mark to the base with faint remnants of small pontil scar.

Measure approximately 9 inches tall. Slight variation in the weight of each, weighing approx 600 grams and 780 grams.

I was hoping to try and confirm age and possible maker, at present I was thinking along the lines of Victorian, circa 1890ish and possibly by Stevens & Williams or alternatively to a lesser extent possibly Czech..?

All thoughts welcome.

Many thanks
Greg

Your date is right but you may never find the answer to who. Those flowers are pretty common; the bicolour leaves less so. Boulton and Mills might be another possibility. Bohemian rather than Czech though. Nice that you have a proper pair

Thanks for taking a look Christine.

I take your point about trying to pinpoint a specific maker on these, there do indeed appear many similarities across several likely candidates. After looking through a few similar examples, I'm inclined to lean towards one of the Stourbridge makers rather than a Bohemian one, both Stevens and Williams and Boulton and Mills do seem like likely candidates. Thanks for the confirmation on the date, the decoration did seem to scream Victorian. :)

Many thanks.
