I couldnt walk past these vases at a recent market, the quality of the enamel hand painted flowers is stunning, I cant stop gazing at them ! :-* .
Who made them ??
Its White opaline glass, with a matt finish outside , shiny inside.
The flowers are different on each vase, and I've just noticed the design on the neck is different as well.
17 cm tall, 6 3/4 inches.
Flat matt bases, a vague shallow concave mark on one, less so on the other.
I'm thinking French perhaps, all ideas or help appreciated on these 2
Cheers
Andy

A few more photos ! :P

Managed a couple of better base shots .

I'm far from an expert, about as far as you can get actually :) but a search on Moser or Harrach maybe? Because of the detail of the flowers...
-
They may be English. That trompe l'oeil round the top reminds me of a bulb vase of Patricia's. I will check the book later

Thanks Ladies,
I've had a good look, haven't found anything very close, Harrach did lots of Milk glass, but
I'm wondering if Christine may be on the right track, shape wise, Webb have some close matches,
and i vaguely think the 'trompe l'oeil ' looked familiar from somewhere. Trick of the eye, 3d effect !
I'm leaning towards England now !
Christine, which book do you mean??

Patricia's bulb vase book

Have a look at Bristol glass if you're leaning toward English..told you I was no expert LOL
-
It's not Bristol glass; it's an American myth that anything painted is Bristol glass.
There is no manufacturer or even country for the bulb vase I was thinking of, sorry
-
we tentatively like to say "possibly from Sunderland, or from Bohemia, unless it is Legras" - we just don't know.
-
Sorry Ivo, thats gone over my head ???
Can't find anything very similar to the style of painting and the matt finish. Have to keep looking.
If i had painted them, I would have signed them !
;D

The matt finish is provided to let the enamel adhere to the body and is fairly standard. I have one here which is same finish, same underside, similar shape - just not as opulently decorated. The provenance of mine is Bohemia circa 1880-1920; decoration quality of these pieces varies enormously as they were decorated either in professional decorator shops, or in cottage industry. If you have two of these vases it is either part of a garniture (the largest in the middle is missing) or you're talking altar vases.

Showed them to the Parents today, keen gardeners, i think we've identified most of the flowers.
on one, auricula, purple daisies, white narcissus, wild rose eglantine, purple Iris.
The other, Hollyhock, Tulip, blue anemone, white and red Dahlia, blue chrysanthemumdemum and a red Verbena.
All typical English flowers, maybe France as well, but bohemia, possibly not.
Its another clue
;D

??? All glass decorators worked from picture books, not from life.

:P ::)

If the wholesaler wanted English flowers they got English flowers; may not mean they were painted in England
-
I think these are definitely bohemian. Harrach did do a lot of this sort of glass. This is better than "cottage ware" imho. 1870's.

Many thanks for your valued opinion.
Love your website! Beautiful pictures !
