I've a wonderful glass cat by Licio Zanetti, and was just wondering if it's supposed to be a specific breed or just an approximation of catness? It's around the size of a small housecat - nearly 60cm long and about 25cm tall.
Thanks for looking.

Did you mean to post this in Cafe, Nic?
-
That is some cat. It looks like a fighting tom or a major big cat threat. Is it signed? If it is, I'll beg and plead to put it in the zoo. (I'm shameless.)
-
Very different for Zanetti!!! interesting .
-
That is never no cat - it is an approximation of something feral but not a f.domesticus.

Aye. Was just idle pondering about the breed of cat rather than anything to do with the glass itself - so I figured Cafe would be the best place.

Feel free to use any of the images. Let me know if you need them bigger.

You've not seen some of the felidae that roam the streets around here! ;D
-
Seems Von Zezschwitz auctions in Munich had one earlier this year, and they thought it was a panther of some kind...

-
It looks as if it's been crossed with a bull...
that ain't no kitty!
-
You're the second person to call it a bull/cat hybrid. ;D
-
Bullkit.
:)
-
My observations for what they are worth Nic:
It is beautiful.
It is different.
It is more likely a Panther.
It is covetous.
Is it for sale?
;D
-
It was bought to put in the new webshop I'm working on... but I'm toying with keeping it, because it's fantastic. :-\
That said, still got to find a place for it to be displayed - it weighs over 8kg, so a shelf is a no-no.
-
;)
I'll just do my editor thing
It is covetous.
and say it's covetable
-
It certainly makes a statement, and it evokes emotion - but I think it's really and truly horrible, sorry. :-[
-
Christine... Oh dear, I looked it up first and it said:
Definition of COVETOUS
: marked by inordinate desire for wealth or possessions or for another's possessions.
So I thought that as I wanted it so much it was appropriate. :(
But I have to agree that it is also very covetable.
Actually, just the green envy face would have been quicker and simpler. Please can we have it back??
-
Thanks, Nic. If you'll email me your full name, I'll give you credit for the photo in the zoo.
-
Well you can run with either Nic Wilson, as in my sig below, or Nicholas Wilson if you want a bit more formaility. ;D
It certainly makes a statement, and it evokes emotion - but I think it's really and truly horrible, sorry. :-[
Don't worry about it. I've got a knack for buying statement sculptures that people love or hate - or even get confused about.
???
I took a giant Fabio Onesto glass sculpture on the fair circuit and everyone thought it was astonishing... because it had presence... but no one could work out if they actually liked it or not!
I think that's the fun of modern/contemporary art, though. Even if you don't like it, it can sometimes still instill an emotional response.
-
That is a beauty ! Panther is what it says to me, far too grrrrr for a purrrr ;D Not a piece for putting on a shelf !!
-
I think it's kitsch, but that it thinks it's art.
Certainly a statement - but not one I'd make.
I love cats - but think they often fail in art because the artist dosn't understand them.
But then I'm not fond of Picasso's cubic stuff, perhaps that has a bearing on my feelings about this piece!
-
My walls are covered in geometric and abstract art... ;D
-
For me, at least, it's not really Zanetti's understanding of, or perhaps lack of, the subject that draws me to it, but rather his understanding of the medium and of shape. Whether it's a moggy, panther or kitty-bull is quite incidental to its strikingly geometric monolithic presence.
-
I love abstract art,, and a fair bit of geometric and cubic stuff. I just don't like Picasso's cubic stuff. ;D
-
Well, whatever kitty's flaws, it does have eyes on both sides of its head. ;D
-
Now I know who stole my steroids, not that I am about to say naughty kitty....
John
-
Well, whatever kitty's flaws, it does have eyes on both sides of its head. ;D
I see no flaws Nicholas(!), I love it and would gladly make a shelf strong enough to support it.
However, I believe we were being asked if we could make out what it was;
"I've a wonderful glass cat by Licio Zanetti, and was just wondering if it's supposed to be a specific breed or just an approximation of catness?".
So I still think it is a beautiful Panther.
-
Link already posted, so deleted. Definitely a panther.
-
The panther is in the zoo now at http://sites.google.com/site/muranozoo/mammals-9. It looks quite handsome there. I might should shift it to the bottom of the page as other animals are added. It might crush the pictures below it. That is one huge sculpture.
-
Looks good there. It's only my second biggest glass sculpture, though. :o ;D
-
Go on Nic, show us your biggest glass sculpture... is it an animal? :D
-
It's a human animal. Well, without any arms. Or a head. :D
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b108/pinkspoons/3b-86.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b108/pinkspoons/1b-113.jpg
A full two-foot tall and a whopping +20kg in weight.
-
Anita it does look good on there and I like the extra and informative precis about it.
I would be interested to see how it looks, compared to the piece next to it, if it were placed at a proportionate size on the page....it's 4 times longer than the coati!
An amazing beast - I think it's beautiful.

Are we sure that's a human???? :o ::)

I am having a hard time figuring the sculpture out. It looks like someone was flying along the ground at high speeds and splatted into a tree.
-
Well Nic, thank you for showing it to us...I can't say I have worked out exactly what it is, but I would give it house room if only for the chance to ponder what it represents.
At the moment, I am going with Anita, but maybe an aerial view could be enlightening?
-
I don't have an aerial view (I'd need a stepladder to take the shot on my photo table), but these should show more:

As far as I've figured is that it's a Hamadryad, a tree-spirit-creature thingummy from Greek mythology. When the tree died, so did the spirit - presumably why the tree and the torso are both a bit chopped up.
-

That's the eternal problem of photographing objects that are either very long or very tall - you have to pull the camera back to fit it all in, and it ends up looking very tiny - and the opposite is, of course, true for photos of items that are very small and that require close-ups to see any real detail. They end up looking massive!
-
maybe best then to photograph those items with a known object (a classy one of course :) ) next to it to better demonstrate the size.
m
-
I do have a corner in my studio/study/workshop for photographing objects in-situ with props, but it's currently buried in clutter. Oops!
-
I'm wondering if there might be a naiad (the water spirit) to go with your dryad - they would make a wonderful pair!
-
I've only ever seen this model, unfortunately. And, as far as I know, there are only three of these in existence.
Glass and water spirits sound like an amazing and apt combination, though!
But I'd pity any table or shelf they sat on as a pair.
-
They'd need a concrete plinth each. ;D
My imagination is working overtime on the Naiad to go with your Dryad... glassy dreams!
-
Okay, my problem was that I was looking at the whole thing and did not realize it was a body beside the tree. ;) These angles make that much more clear and equally obvious is that it was female. ::) Quite lovely actually. Just how tall is it? It's one of those pieces that is very tactile and you just want to stroke it (minds out of the gutter everyone)

It's 60cm / 24" tall. And very very solid. :o
