I have this Decanter, 16cm in height, unsure of maker but thought it might be Dartington but what I need is a clear glass stopper if anyone has one. The hole is 8.4cm in circumference. The frosted part is 2.7 cm. From the bottom of the frosted part to the upper lip is 3.5cm and the diameter at the top is 4.4cm. This is really nice shape and a good weight and needs a stopper to give it back its dignity :D ;D If you do recognize it let me know. Message me through here. Thanks.

A boxed Dartington one in my Picasa album probably help establish the style of stopper you need.

That would sit nice with it. I'm not overly hopeful but its worth a try, I will keep looking. It was suggested I use it to put flowers in !! Not going to happen lol. Thanks for that Chris.

thinking out loud..............it looks to have an ususually deep recessed pan-topped sort of opening - don't recall seeing anything quite like it before - can only think the original stopper would have been quite long. You sure there is nothing on the base to indicate maker/origin? If you don't find a suitable glass stopper, try one of those black rubber conical pointy wine bottle stoppers - the sort with a chrome ball top - should give the appropriate minimalist look :)
-
Not sure if I can describe the base but here goes, seems to have had a pontil as there is a circle in the middle, had to be flat to sit on the table level, it looks as if it has been smoothed over if any of that makes sense. There are no marks at all. It feels like it is good quality and a solid piece and very clear. In my mind I saw a a large round stopper sitting a couple of mil above the upper lip. I like the idea of the chrome stopper, lots of them in charity shops and I'm out looking today.I will see if they will be wide enough and could use a wine stopper for the OH's vino (not that it stays in the bottle long ;D ;D) Thanks.

I picked up this stopper. Not too sure of it ! Think it could do with sitting a little bit lower. Honest opinions please ???

Do you think this 'style' would suit it?

I think Pete's choice is good, artistically - the 'ball' stopper echoing the roundness of the body - I could live with that :)
Chris, is that a flattish 'lozenge' type stopper. or is it more round than I can see?
-
Yes Paul it's a flat polished lozenge type bought a pair of ships decanters? last week could not resist after bartering down to a tenner for the pair one is plain one a grapevine etched pattern, similar, both in design and stopper both having a neat polished pontil mark and numbered. Not sure if they anything special and if I can even be bothered cleaning them anyway.
Some photos here if you can be bothered to click on the link (some cannot don't you know) :P

I like the ships decanters. The stopper looks a bit thinner than I need. It has to be 8.4mm circumference. I got the stopper with a pressed glass decanter but dont think this was its original stopper. £3 was ok to pay. would be good if I could somehow grind the stopper a little but I dont have the necessary tools and skills. It is growing on me, I just need some Reme Martin to put in it. I tried the wine stopper but far too thin. If I find another I will try it. Always a buyer for stoppers on ebay : )

I'd go for the plain one Chris - but the machine acid etching (in my 'umble opinion) somehow doesn't look right. Lozenge stoppers and neck rings go back a long way, as you'll know - and originally these lozenge stoppers often had lunar cuts around the edge - just adds a nice little touch. Trouble is they do take up a lot of space, but the price and quality both sound as though you had a bargain.
I know there's been a lot of moaning in recent times about folks who can't access this or that - but have to say that, touch wood and aside from my own incompetence, I've been free from these gremlins Just between you and me I think it's just some wimmin wot have an attention seeking syndrome. ;)
I believe there are people who buy and collect only C18 stoppers - some of the elaborate coloured examples are very attractive.
-
Measured the bullseye/lozenge type stopper's 7.5mm the Dartington stopper is huge at 12mm circumference.
Agree with you about the etching Paul, do you think there's any age to them or just 'in the style of'

Chris - decanters are being made all the time, and feel sure yours are quite recent - apologies, my comments were perhaps inappropriate and I was really only implying that modern machine etched pieces weren't my cup of tea, although I like the plain one. However, I guess that ships decanters are a style/shape that is forever popular so never go out of production. I like C19 machine etched pieces - just because they're old I suppose. :) So what are you going to do with these two - sell on ebay??
I see that some of the stopper circumferences mentioned would suggest matchstick thin stoppers ;D - but my own feeling is that even if you got a replacement stopper from the same factory there would still some wobble - which is why they are made to fit and given matching Nos. at the factory, so that they are a true pair. I suppose one advantage of modern plastic inserts is that they provide a good fit as the plastic is a bit forgiving.
Bought the lone stopper you see in the attached pic., from a charity shop yesterday - just struck me as an unusually long example at 5.5" - 140mm - does have a No. and is good quality - haven't a clue as to age. Diameter is something like 19.5mm midway up the stub.
regarding Pete's missing stopper - are there places you can go and get one adjusted to fit your decanter - even if not identical to the original?
Probably not cost effective I guess.

Bin!!!!! Lol
Knew I should stick to what I know ( which is not a lot) ;D

I am going to an old school engravers, I say old school as he is a grumpy old git that was in the shop when I was a kid ;D and customer services is not his strong point but if anyone can adjust the stopper he can. (It has a small amount of movement) I know he does Crystal Trophies etc. I have a Bench grinder that I need a polishing wheel for and also need a polishing compound in the form of a stick/wax crayon and I can play on a few useless pieces and see how it goes. Anyone know if the polishing compound is available as a stick ? I have the powders but they are messy and take ages even with a dremel.
