Title: Pink Alabastro / Rosaline Animal Figurines - ID?
Post by: dorian_graye on July 04, 2012, 12:23:47 PM
I found these unique animal figurines at a consignment shop.  The deep pink color that fades to an almost white glass reminded me of "alabastro" glass from Italy or "rosaline" glass from Steuben.  I guess they also have the look of pink jade, but there are air bubbles in the glass.  They may be Chinese.  The detail on the goat is very nice for such a small figure.  They measure about 3" inches long.  I would love to know more about them.

Also, these seem oddly heavy for their diminutive size.  Perhaps there is a bit of lead content in the glass....

Well I had to have a look  'cos there was 'animal' in the title, and am I glad I did.  They are lovely and as you say, so much detail.

I haven't seen anything like these before but will go on the hunt and report back if I find anything out.

Thanks Rosie.  I thought I remembered there being someone in the forum who appreciated animal figurines.

Right, my thoughts on the Italian animals I've seen in the past is that there is a certain crudeness in the way they are formed.  They have the look of being hand blown, where as these almost seem molded.  They remind me a bit of tiny Bimini pieces with their smallness and detail.

I believe Bimini are hand blown lamp glass....yours look to be hot worked glass and very detailed.

There are no mould lines or marks that might reveal how they were made.

Here is an online auction link to a small deer of the same size in a different color:  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OUTSTANDING-ALABASTRO-MURANO-GLASS-ANIMAL-DEER-SEGUSO-/250981255009?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item3a6fa60761#ht_606wt_907

The styling is also very similar.

Thanks DG, I know her well....she does have lovely pieces,  and wraps well for posting.  I have bought pieces from her in the past.
I'm not sure that the deer is the same type as yours though.....it looks very like a Seguso piece (might not be but looks it) whilst your animals concentrate on minute detail more. She does have a similar ellie though, so worth a look.
