Title: Old egg shaped covered dish
Post by: ks85 on July 06, 2012, 09:01:25 PM
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about this piece.  It is about 4.5" and very thin.  Also, it is marked on the bottom, but I can't read any of it.
I would greatly appreciate any info or ideas.  Thanks for looking.

Welcome to the board :)
Are you in the States?  it sometimes can aid identification if we know where the piece was bought, although not always.
The top word 'might' say Czechoslovakia
the bottom seems to be something with numbers 986- ?? in it.
Perhaps Bohemian 1930's?
I love it!

Thank you very much for the reply flying free.

You are very good :).  Yes I am in the US.  Also, the item actually came from a large collection which included many pieces of Czech glass plus some other random pieces, mostly American.   So there is a good chance that it is Czech.

Thanks again.

I don't recognise the decor, but if you take a look through this site
Kralik-glass.com you maybe might find something similar?
It's really gorgeous - I'm quite jealous  ;D

Thanks again for the reply Flying Free.  Unfortunately I do not believe anything similar is shown on there, unless I have somehow missed it.

Thanks Keith.  This page has had me looking at Ikora as well.  https://sites.google.com/site/loetzandglass/wmf-ikora-glass

However, Alfredo says they tend to be thick pieces of glass. This one is very thin.

Thanks again for the replies, both are definitely possibilities.

I would never say never, but I don't think it is Ikora.
sometimes Bohemian pieces had 'patent no ***' on the bottom of them.  Harrach pieces sometimes have enamelled numbers on the bottom.  It's hard to tell but it does look like the writing on the bottom may have been enamelled on your pics?  Or does it look like it was engraved?  Is that they remains of the original label on the right hand side of your base pic?  if so can we see the whole base to see if there are any remaining clues on the edge of the shape of label for example?

I am not 100% sure what the mark is, maybe etched/engraved.  It is not enamel though.
Unfortunately, the sticker on the bottom was just an old price tag from an antique shop.
Thanks.
