Title: Vasart/ Strathearn transitional or not???
Post by: Roger H on July 16, 2012, 09:48:34 PM
Bought this lovely weight recently but still cannot make up my mind as to the dating of it, any thoughts?  Diameter is 2.90 inches.
      Regards Roger

A photo of the whole weight from the top, shoiwing the central canes, would be good.

I wondered if somebody would ask for that, but at the time I only had Mb photos.  Here's one but its not super clarity. The pale 3rd row jellyfish canes I found unusual.

I have seen the canes in both vasart and strathearn occasionaly so I guess I will have to give it the name vasarthearn mid 1960s.

I would refer to this one as "transitional" - late Vasart or early Strathearn.

Yes, thank you, I was only joking about the conjoined names.
      Transitional is the correct terminology.

Taken another look at this weight and 1960s seems quite reasonable. Had another look through Richard More's quite comprehensive site and I was surprised how many I considered to be vasart ltd are really early strathearn, very interesting.

Richard's site is an excellent resource.

However, he gives an "early Strathearn" attribution to a number of weights that are not signed or labelled and for which, on overall appearance, I would prefer to see a description of "transitional Vasart Ltd / Strathearn".

Yes wouldn't it be good to ask somebody who was there in the mid 60s.
The ghostly canes in the 3rd row still intrigue me.

Still checking through Richard More's site and the layout and cane positioning of DCP04657VP7 looks very close to mine.     Gets "more" interesting by the hour.
