Title: USA Bergen's 'Crescent'/Dauntless, or Belgian VSL
Post by: Paul S. on August 05, 2012, 01:23:51 PM
In the course of looking at images on Gerry LaCroix's site - which attempts to help with some of the confusion that arises with VSL versus some of the earlier States cased and cut pieces - now believe the attached pix show what is possibly Bergen's Crescent a.k.a 'Dauntless'  -  or, of course, it might just still be a piece of VSL :-\                   Unmarked, but obviously a piece of accomplished cutting - the bowl I believe is cranberry over clear - and apart from some smallish areas of the bowl, almost the whole piece shows cutting of some sort.      Might this date to the very late C19, or is it a C20 product.
Would appreciae some comments and help please from over the pond, if possible, and thanks for looking. :)

apologies, forgot the size..............height is c. 194mm, which lies somewhere between 7.5" and 7.75" - so not a very obvious imperial dimension.

For what its worth I don't believe its Bergen as I've not encountered Bergen cut to clear with an air trap stem plus the foot is far different than Bergen used as their goblet stems bottoms are simply round. Yours is quite a bit better quality than anything they produced that I've seen although I will say that the cutting is similar. Hawkes, Clark & Dorflinger did a few air trap stems & cut to clear so maybe? Ken

thanks for the reply.              Having looked at the images on LaCroix's site, there is in fact a green over clear bowl with what appears to be an identical pattern, and it was on the basis of this information that I reached my conclusion.         Unfortunately, this is not an area in which I have any knowledge  -  this piece was acquired very early one morning, some two or three years back for a small outlay, and since I collect drinking glasses I couldn't pass it by.         Is it possible that you might be able to look at the site in question to see if perhaps I have the wrong end of the stick, or whatever.             There is in fact an example of Dorflinger's 'Duchess shown on that site, although it is not the same as this pattern.         thanks. :)

Unfortunately I cannot help further as I only have three cut glass references &  am unaware of a LaCroix's site without a URL unless its the ACGA site. Years ago I kept up on Brilliant, but when the market dropped off in the U.S. a decade ago I lost interest from a buying standpoint.
