Title: Why do you buy what you buy?
Post by: Foxfurie on August 06, 2012, 01:05:01 PM
I just wondered what people's motivation was for their collecting and why they buy the pieces they do? Do you buy it because it might be worth something or because you like it?

As I am a real newbie I only have five or six pieces at the moment and most of them aren't worth anything at all, I collect things because I like them or because they are pretty, or that they "match" or "go with" other things I own (not just glass).

I think my favourite piece is my glass lamp base, but also because it has sentimental value - here it is lurking in my bathroom where it lives. Does anyone else have a really favourite thing they love more than any of their other pieces? (probably easier when you only have a few like me)

I buy stuff that speaks to me nicely, or stuff that  just screams at me.
I have to like it. (or know somebody else who will)

I think I know what you meant about screaming at you... I am trying to convince an american seller to post something international for me... negotiation is not going as well as I would like... But I HAVE to buy one of these

I'd like the Janku one or a Steuben one but I think my husband would kill me outright if I did!

You need to work on him, obviously. (your husband, not the seller. I'm sure another glowing fox will turn up with somebody who isn't going to be so difficult.)
Does he have hobbies he spends money on?
You can always work the idea that in the secondary market, anything you buy might well sell to somebody else - you don't actually loose all your outlay the way you do in the primary market.
Many folk do find it's a hobby that can, if you're sensible, almost pay for itself.
The best thing to do is convert him to glass too.  8)

I think as long as I don't buy hundreds of pieces, so he thinks I have magpie syndrome ("oooh shiny things") then I will be allowed to keep buying the odd one or two. He is pretty much a minimalist person and would rather we threw all the ornaments out! Annoyingly he only spends money on computer games and I don't want to get in a tizz about that or he'll stop and then he'll be under my feet  ;D ::)

I can't imagine I'd ever make any money at it. I wouldn't even know where to start. I do have to say I am very jealous of the collections I have seen on some of the threads, they are amazing! So many beautiful pieces.

Famous last words. The only way to learn what to buy that will make money is to read books, read this board and other similar ones, look at and handle as much glass as possible, look at ebay sales. etc., etc.

First thing you should learn is check out other sites when buying new glass as eBay is often a suckers bet. If you bought the one you are looking at your total would be $21.94. You might say money by checking other sites rather than eBay. Here is one that is $4 less for the same thing & shipping might be cheaper also.
This site is found by Googling Boyd Vaseline Sly Fox: http://www.opensalts.net/sly.pdf

I only buy what I love (or can live with if I'm buying it because I think it is interesting and I want to research it).  And then it goes into my collection.  Everything I buy goes on display or has been on display in my home at some point, because I bought it because it 'spoke' to me.  i.e. I loved it when I bought it and imagined it would fit with other things in my home.
If I need to sell something to buy other things (which I do now as my collection of various ceramics and glass got completely out of hand - well it did according to my husband sigghh) then at least I can sell it with a sense of 'knowing' it I suppose.

I would weigh up how much you really want an item that costs that much to post abroad and as Ohio says, do some research first to see if you could find it cheaper.

Have fun.  Search this board first before buying :)  it may save you many pennies.

ah, husbands and glass...hmm.

Got rid of husband so now have more room & money for glass rofl.

New toyboy is far more tolerant of my need for glass and carries it all for me on our outings :-D

Toyboys are just great, aren't they?  8)
Mine isn't nearly as rich as the vile-ex - but he's so much more generous, in every way.  ;D

Oh I don't mind the one I have he just needs educating a bit in certain areas. It's only 3 years at the start of Sept so he's hardly broken in yet  ;D

"Toyboy" is a horrendous term... I don't understand why anyone would so happily use such a word to refer to a partner.   ???

My focus is on Skrdlovice.  I buy glass for my collection, or when times are a little harder financially, for resale.  I have to handle a piece to know that I really like it.

I use it tongue in cheek about my darling other half... just as he calls me "grave robber"  :o

I collect just about anything I like, the only thing stopping me filling the house to the rafters is the lack of money, thinking about it it's only the loft that has any space :o ;D ;D

I use the term tongue-in-cheek too - he's only 3 months younger than me, but he IS the youngest bloke I've ever been with.
We don't really know what to "label" each other.  ::)

its a term of endearment in our house Anik not horrendous at all - and he chose to refer to himself as that, tongue firmly in cheek.

glass-wise I buy anything that catches my eye - love Davidson art deco glass in particular and tend to hang on to more than I should :-)

wots rong with us real husbands - we're available 24 hours a day, and we've made that commitment to be there through thick and thin  -  and do toy boys last that long anyway ;D ;D.    We have to listen to the weeping, emotions because the cat is about to be put down, her parents woes, am coffee, pm tea, come and pick me up because it's raining, permanently having the duvet pulled to her side of the bed......
you can see how shallow most wimmin are though  -  just look at all those young things who throw themselves at pop stars  -  they only do it for the money, there's no depth to it at all ;) ;)

Collecting is a passion, and sometimes I wish I didn't suffer from it  -  trouble is the passion is too diverse........... there's C18 table glass, just about all drinking glasses, uranium glass, much pressed material from the C19, anything really art nouveau, anything really art deco   -  water jugs  -  other jugs  -  much cut glass.................ughhhhhhhh

But as for good advice - buy books and read them, and go to glass fairs - there's no substitute for actually seeing the stuff.

My "toyboy" has been with me for 24 years!
(note my restraint from any other comment, although you left yourself wide open!  :P)

Fairs are the best places to go - you get to meet loads of other glass addicts, while surrounded by the best of the stuff, and to talk and talk and talk about it!
I may live up in Dundee - but I'll be at Birmingham in November. 8)

I've had my toy boy for 11 years and he's now past his best-before date but I don't plan on trading him in for a newer model

Nothing wrong with Toyboys, I've been married to one for 45 years!  :o

Don't know how he puts up with me, I wouldn't put up with me if I didn't have to!!

He has more books and astronomy paraphernalia than I have glass, and I have a lot of glass!! So he can't and doesn't moan... even pays for some of it!!  :D

As for glass collecting Foxfurie, buy what pleases you, sell what doesn't and learn as much as you can.
Come to Cambridge... you will not go home empty handed... guaranteed!!

I only buy if I like (and can afford!) but also often buy if I am intrigued.....  I love seeing something in a charity shop or boot sale, buying it and then spending hours researching and trying to discover what I have! Get a great 'buzz' if I am able to solve the mystery! Obviously not always sucessful and have some pieces that I have still to identify and go back to again and again!

Then sometimes I come across something online or in a book when I am not looking for it, that resolves an old puzzle and it is very exciting! By constantly researching  I find I am learning so much about glass that I don't own and am able to identify more and more. I think it is an addiction..

Oh, ladies... toyboys...... No no no..... give me an older man any day of week...! ;)

A friend got me started - helped by finding a few pieces of Isle of Wight glass in the local charity shop.
Love mystery pieces I can research, which leads me to loads of pieces I'd love to own if money was no object.
