Title: Carnival Celery, Brockwitz "Zurich" 22452 1915 or?
Post by: Jayne on August 07, 2012, 11:36:20 AM
I recently purchased these two celeries, which I thought to be Brockwitz "Zurich" 22452  shown in Pamela's 1915 catalogue. Weight each 0.72 kilos, height 17cm, diameter across top 11cm.

Since then I noticed a similar Celery in this Raymond Notley article, third page down, claiming it is an Eda Glassbruks Celery, "Lasse" pattern.

I've also read an interesting article discussing the Pinwheel Cylinder Vase, and how several different makers produced one all very similar to each other.

Can anyone confirm who made my Celeries please?

Your celeries were made by Brockwitz. It is their Zurich pattern and it is known by Carnival Glass collectors as CURVED STAR.

These pieces were not made by Eda Glasbruk (and this is not the Lasse pattern). It is a fact that Eda made their own version of the Curved Star pattern but it is different to the Brockwitz version. Eda did not make this shape in Curved Star (Lasse).

I am delighted that you have found my article on the Pinwheel pattern and the differences between the makers to be interesting. It took quite some time to research that (and to keep myself sane while doing it ;D ) The article is on my old geocities website which is in archive form and is likely to vanish shortly.

We've just released our e-book on Swedish Carnival Glass in which there is a lot of info and illustrations on the Eda version of Curved Star (Lasse and Dagny) along with illustrated explanations of how to recognise the differences between the Eda, Brockwitz and Karhula versions of that pattern.

My thanks Glen for your confirmation that my celeries are Brockwitz Zurich/Curved Star.

Indeed your article is fascinating, it was surprising to learn how many makers produced so strikingly similar vases, and the small differences between them.

Best of luck with your new e-book. :)
