Another carnival bowl that I found for my mother... (the Imperial Double Dutch pattern as it has two windmills - see Glen, I do take notes when you explain things. :)) ... David Doty's site gives this with the outside as Floral and Optic, but this one doesn't appear to have any Optic, so would it just be called Floral, or is it something else?
Also, what is the difference between a bowl and a spittoon - Double Dutch is shown in both on David's site, but I don't know how to tell them apart. Help!

Anne - nice bowl. The exterior design is called Floral & Optic. Yes, I know you can't see anything that looks like an optic, but that's those weirdy Carnival collectors for you. :lol:
The difference between a bowl and a spittoon? Well, the spittoon shape(cuspidor) is pinched in and then flared at the top. It's impossible to see in that photo of Dave's as it is foreshortened and so the pinching and flaring is not really visible.
Cuspidors are pretty rare. I'll try and find a photo of one to show you.

Thank you Glen, that is good to know. Mum always asks me about the glass I find for her, so she'll be fascinated by this I'm sure. Do you know what sort of date these were made between at all?
I think I understand the spittoon shape now - rather like a cauldron? It was not being able to see a difference in David's photos that was confusing me. The one I bought is an ordinary bowl shaped one - just as well, as if my mother thought it was rare she'd hide it away in the cupboard in case it got broken! I'd far rather she had something she felt comfortable with on view so she gets pleasure from seeing it.

Hi Anne - first you need to know that Double Dutch is much harder to find than the regular Windmill bowls. Date of production? Well probably from around 1910 ish (maybe a year or two later) through to the 1920s.
You've described the spittoon shape perfectly as a cauldron. Strictly speaking, spittoons were made as functional items. However, the characteristic shaping (the pinch and flare) at the neck of a vase or on a bowl, has been done from time to time. I should add that such shaping is rare. On bowls it is very rare indeed. Vases too, also rare. Interestingly, Brockwitz and Riihimaki used that shaping on sugars and jardinieres from time to time as well. It makes for a very sought-after shape.

Oooh I see, thanks Glen. It's a super pattern for sure - I do like the blue version David has on his site. All Mum's carnival so far is orange - this is her fifth piece - she's decided to collect only carnival now, so is getting rid of much of her other glass (in my direction!).
I missed a beautiful "peacock blue" bowl recently - and pair of candlesticks with a sort of feather pattern I think - rather like the headdress one. I can't remember what the bowl pattern was but the colour was fab - I went back to where I'd seen it and it had gone <sniff>. That will teach me not to dilly dally won't it?! :oops:

Woah Anne! Those candlesticks sound very interesting indeed. And so does the bowl.
By the way, the dark Carnival bowl in the Double Dutch pattern is actually purple. Imperial made very little (old, Classic) blue Carnival. Their purple is amazing stuff though - usually double or triple doped (iridised) with an electric iridescence that really sizzles.

The Double Dutch one was for me Glen. 8) Taking it over to Mum in about 10 minutes. :)
