Does anyone recognise this item, it came at auction with a batch of paperweights but seems to be more like a pin dish, it is painted reverse on the back and the clothing style seems 18th Century to me. Any ideas of it's origin/ date?
Sadly it is quite badly chipped in a few places.
many thanks

I could be completely wrong but I think it is an open salt and I also think it could be quite old and fairly rare. But I could be wrong :-\

I've found a pair similar attributed as Georgian c1800 but no source of id I'm afraid. They seem to be in good condition to me, chips are quite usual on these I think as is wear to the portrait miniature so yours looks in good condition.
edited to add:
A better one listed here with repaired chips - this is id'd as German late 18th century so would not be classed as 'Georgian' I don't think?? but of the period.

Many thanks, especially for finding the similar one for sale, most interesting, I had guessed at French myself.
