Looking at some of the remarkable design by Helena Matos and Pedro Alvarez for the 1972 Hand made factory glass exhibition, I wondered about Fabrica Escola Irmãos Stephens as Stephens seemed an odd name for a Portugese glassworks. Turns out that he was an English industrialist, William Stephens, who in 1769 got the charter to restore/restart the Royal Glassworks and ended up founding Portugal's glass industry. He died c1830 but his family obviously continued and the glassworks was by the 20th century the National Glassworks. (Various names in between and later). But in general very little information about this. There is, or will be, a national glass museum in original buildings. Stephens Palace being a separate sight in itself.
If anyone can add anything, would like to hear.

Designers at the Stephens factory were Maria Helena Matos born 1923 and a Pedro Alvarez (not any joy on tracing work on line for either.

M-glass is the merger of all portugese glass works in the year 2000 including cristais de alcobaca, atlantis cristal, ivima and a bottle plant - the precise details can be looked up. The ancient history of these is diverse but well described - in portugese. I assume a museum can be found in Marinha Grande, the centre of glass industry.
Escola is school of course - so there is a glass school named after the founder of the Industry.

have you seen this information here Frank? I'm not sure it helps for the time period but may provide a nugget of info that you can follow up on?
apologies if it is a red herring. I just remembered looking all this up when Siegmar helped me with a goblet in the June issue of PK.

Thanks, interesting that a lot of their production went UK/US wards but little gets ID'd particularly from more creative ranges of the 70s.
