At least I think it's glass. I picked this up with some other pieces as part of a job lot in South West England. Not really my cup of tea otherwise. I'm sure that I've seen it before somewhere but can't seem to track it down. Any pointers would be much appreciated although I would think "once seen, never forgotten" or maybe "once seen, best forgotton" probably applies. It stands about 9 inches (22 cm) high and is hollow, so almost certainly intended as a vase.
-
nope, not a clue Neil........looks as though it's trying to copy one of those Tiffany nouveau pieces from the Grover's book. I've seen that flecked look before but don't remember where - has it been acid bathed to get that effect do you think.
-
Hi Paul, thank for replying. I don't think it's been acid bathed. The "flecks" go right through the glass which appears to be cased - clear glass over whatever lies underneath to give it that flecked look. I know what you mean about the Tiffany option. I'll try to look at their contemporaries. I just thought that it was such a unique looking piece that somebody on this forum would recognise it.

i think it's Romanian possibly by Ioan Nemtoi?
I'll have a quick scout and see if I can find a more definite name to investigate.

Wild handles, are they glass? The body has been acid etched and I would have thought factory rather than studio piece.
-
Hi, I think the handles are a form of alloy. Thanks for the lead to Ioan Nemtoi, not a name I'm familiar with. I'll see what I can track down.

Actually I may be wrong with that name and perhaps instead Dan Bancila or similar

Yup, I can see the Dan Bancila possibility. Romanian then, you think? Did he have many acolytes?
-
I had the wrong Ioan - Ioan Tubi Vadan is who I was thinking of
link to another piece here by him

But is yours signed?
I think it's possible more than one maker might have made your vase but I do think it's most likely come from Romania

I think that Dan Bancila might be closer to it as he worked with fused metal and glass a lot. Unfortunately the piece is not signed and I believe mostof Bancila's work was signed. I got the piece in a job lot of high quality art glass - Whitefriars, Karlin Rushbrooke, Sanders and Wallace etc. - so I'm thinking it might be interesting to find out who made it. Thanks for all your help to date.
-
Ioan Nemtoi did use this sort of metalwork sometimes, M - but this is not his work! ;D
I'd agree, though, that Romania is a good place to start for this bit.

Hi Sue, thanks for that. I'm focusing in on Anca Florea Podaru at the moment as her work seems most like the vase I have. I'll report back if I find the source. Thanks once again for those who have taken time out to help and pointed me in the direction of our Romanian friends.

Hi, just to update you that "artgalleryinabox" who deal with Romanian glass artists in the USA believe it is made by Dan Bancila. I'll keep on it but kudos and thanks to flyingfree for the direction.

I assume you saw his blog, at the very back of his stand here has a couple of similar pieces... but way more colour happy than yours. http://danbancila.blogspot.fr/2008/05/cer-glass-2008.html gives his email on the blog too.
-
Great! Thanks very much. I've emailed him and hope for a positive reply.

But Anca might be worth contacting too as your piece is decorated in the same way as she does.
http://www.amaglass.ro/
Most of her work has the edges of the rim covered by metal so I could not tell if she left the top edge of the glass undecorated like yours... finally found an example that confirms that she does. Not many do it that way.
-
Hi, yes, I'm following through on Anca as well as I said earlier. I'm learning a lot about Romanian glass in the process. Some interesting stuff being made there.

More from Mirela at Artgalleryinabox:
"I used to purchase from Bancila for my gallery and I had a piece just like this one, thus I am sure it's his. It has no name, as far as I know, I used to name them for the gallery, for inventory purposes, and I called this line of vases Bucharest, but Dan did not name this vases, he named his collector's pieces crafted out of with crystal and bronze."
So it looks like we have a winner. I'm still waiting on replies to my emails to Dan Bancila and Anca.
Thanks to everybody who helped.
