Title: Possible Scottish vase
Post by: hdm50 on January 10, 2013, 02:12:22 PM
I had tried a few years ago to have this vase identified with no success but thought I would try again in case someone has come across one before. The glass colour way remonds me of some Monart, Vasart, Strathearn items I have seen and it has the ground pontil base typical of blown glass from Scotland.

My vote is for German; looks very WMF to me  ;)

Thanks Mosquito. Further research suggests that this vase is a Dexel-Ei, often called a Dexel Egg by Walter Dexel who was a designer for WMF.

Mmh, I´m not sure the opening is quite right for a Dexel-egg. I think the top should be a bit more
plain, sometimes even slightly curved inwards... Can you give us dimensions, please? This could be helpful.
But I´d agree it looks very WMF-ish - great piece in any case!  :)

I have looked at several other Dexel eggs on line and the opening is consistent with several others as is the 17-18 cm height. I will try to ad another picture that shows the opening better.

I must admit the Dexel-egg´s tops vary quite a bit:
google (https://www.google.de/search?q=dexel+ei&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=YXHwUP-2LorbtAblyoD4Bg&biw=1525&bih=698&sei=aXHwUL-oHIbDtAaW-IDIDQ)
And if everything else walks and quacks, err, like an egg...  ;D

I further had a quick look into the Ikora book - there wouldn´t be another similar shape shown
in the catalogue reprints. So if Ikora this should be a Dexel-egg or an undocumented piece.

Thanks for your input Dirk. The link you provided was one of several I had come across and noticed the top differences as well especially the turned in look. Wish mine had that as it is more attractive. They were hand blown so I guess one should expect variations. There is wear on the bottom that convinced me that at least it did have age. My reason for researching it is that I feel in fairness to family I should try and tag some of my unsigned pieces so they do not give them away or put them in a garage sale. Not that I am expecting to leave any time soon but as we age, it is good to be prepared..lol.

Good point. I´m hopefully somewhere around the middle now, but nobody from my family´s
interested in glass and whenever I raise that question my nephew says: glass waste container.  ;D
