Title: Uranium & brown vase with ring-shaped impressions - maker?
Post by: dirk. on January 15, 2013, 09:43:13 PM
Hi

Did the title leave anything out? Ah, 15cm tall, ground and polished base.  ;D

Any idea?

Kinda reminds me of a stylized pineapple.

No idea, but I like it - an interesting piece, Dirk.  (I also think it looks like a pineapple... with moles ;D)

Cubby and Anik, thank you! Well, personally I thought it looked a bit like a pineapple.... lol
When I saw the design before puchase I had considered bohemian, but the base finish and
the bright uranium colour seem to point elsewhere. Murano perhaps?

David, it´s always a pleasure hearing from you!  ;D

Nothing new from my side... This vase from an ebay auction appears to have a similar decoration:
ebay (http://www.ebay.de/itm/281120965318?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.de%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D281120965318%26_rdc%3D1)
And, well, I discovered that the ´brown´ is actually purple meanwhile.  ::) (green+purple=brown)

I've been trying to think what it reminded me of and today I stumbled on a Liskeard glass vase - the prunts are very similar.
I'm pretty sure it's not Liskeard Glass but perhaps from the same era? 70's/80's I think.

Just to throw a spanner in the works I am suggesting it might be Japanese by one of the good makers like Kamei or Hineri.  I have noted that they seem to like their "bumps" to be extremely organised in horizontal rows and vertical lines, whereas European makers tend to be very "random" in their placements.  Un fortunately there is a large dearth of information about Japanese firms.  Another sign would be that there are very few included bubbles - I noticed in the 80s when labelled Japanese glass was much more common that the obvious difference between Murano and Japanese ashtray/bowls lay in the purity of the Japanese glass.

Interesting, Ross - much appreciated.  :) I´ll try to look into it. Although, you already wrote, the chances
to find some information on Japanese glass seem low.
