This is a solid plate or tray with diameter 32 cm (12.1/2" for the challenged). It has tiny little bubbles all over and is composed of the colours moss green and pink.
I'm having a hard time seeing how this has been achieved. It is not powder on a clear base and it is not mixed in the melt: it has more the colour and feel of pāte-de-verre - but the design is very simple, almost stern....
The bottom is ground matt and flat over the whole surface.
Pointers invited - am I looking at France or at the US?
-
My guts think French before American - but that might be because it looks like a cheese board. :-[
Very unusual thing, Ivo - I can't see how the colours have been worked either.
-
It's difficult to tell from the photos Ivo, they don't enlarge very well. But looking top down at the edge is it possible it was in clear glass but just a lot of colour got picked up so covered most of it? the rim edge looks as though it might be clear iish? or is it not?
and are the bubbles very regularly round in shape?

Ivo I have this lidded box. It's completely matt inside and out and is much thinner than your tray, but again I can't see that the colours are in a clear glass at all and it looks like pate de verre but I have no idea if it is. It's difficult to know how it was made and it has millions of tiny round bubbles all over it.
It's not the same I know as the appearance of your tray but do the bubbles and the colour effect look similar?
m
-
bingo - the bubbles and the colour scheme look familiar. Will try and wave the macro lens at it when i'm up and about again - right now ko with food poisoning and it aint funny.
-
:-X
Get well soon, Ivo.
-
oh, I'm sorry to hear that - no not funny at all.
I hope it's short lived and you feel better tomorrow.

this is a close up of the back of a pate de verre pendant - iidentified as Walter in the listing. Here's the listing
http://www.boldonauctions.co.uk/lot_details.html?lot_id=64238
It looks very similar to my lidded pot, does your tray (I think it is a tray) look like these bubbles?
m
-
Sort of. I would say the bubbles in this plate are tiny and evenly distributed.
-
sorry Ivo, it's still quite difficult to tell on your pics.
The bubbles in mine are very evenly matched shape and size and are distributed over the entire piece like the back view of the pendant.
I did find a berluze vase by Andre Delatte last night that had a close up pic of the bulbous foot of the vase. It was multi coloured as well and had these same bubbles in. I didn't think it would be possible to make a berluze vase from pate de verre, so perhaps its the way the colours have been laid out and gathered on the marver that make this bubble effect as well as pieces made by Pate de verre?
I think my pot is old, does your tray or cheese board have that feeling? The colours and combination feel old to me.
I'll try and find the pic again and add it for your comparison.

True the macro lens did not really pick it up, I think I'll need a micro for that - and plenty of light.
ah well, wait for spring time.
-
eh? I can't wait for spring time Ivo
I'll have gone off investigating it by that time ;D

this is the vase - scrolling down to look at the larger pics there is one of the bulbous part of the vase from the base. It's a bit difficult to tell but it looks like it has those tiny round holes in as well doesn't it?
is it possible to make a vase that shape from pate de verre? I couldn't see how it could be :-\

Pic has vanished, m.
I don't believe for one moment you'll loose interest or forget that you are investigating this piece. :P
-
;D
hi Sue
if you click on the link then look at their listing and scroll down they have put some pictures on under their description and they should still be showing.
I think it is the second one down which shows a close up of the decor. It seems to have those little teeny round bubbles in as well.

I find it hard to believe that this would be PDV - I know for a fact that the term is used pretty loosely in France; it includes all pressed glass. Dealers wil just tell you about anything.
-
That looks a bit more like corroso, but i've only ever seen that in pics before...
I don't believe for a split second it is PDV.
-
no me neither. It seems to me anything which is mottled in colour is pdv on French ebay or anything that is matt finished - and sometimes just anything that it glass lol ;D
m
-
Do you think your platter could possibly be PDV?
And how are you feeling? Better, I hope!
-
Tjhanks Sue three days in bed was just what I needed.
I'm not thinking pdv now, more a liberal sprinkling of colour which did not dissolve, or which burnt on contact leaving microbubbles. But still unsure if how the plate as made. Not blown or it would have had a smooth inside. Not pressed - or there would have been seams. Or maybe the edge is the seam? Perhaps cast?
-
or the mould seams polished off... ?
3 days in bed is very, very boring. I'm glad for you it's over.
Time to indulge a bit in stuffing your face with whatever you fancy to put the weight back on! :D

I saw a smaller version of this flat plate type design, very solid and heavy, yesterday and it was signed Hadeland.
It didn't have the bubbles in and was one colour but the design reminded me immediately of yours. Might be worth looking into?

looks like it is the same technique, frosted, colour inclusions et all. Nice sleuthing - I'll keep looking thanks 1.000.000 M ;)

used as a nicknack only - my oh my what could it mean?
-
and when you enlarge that first mottled Vase on the pic of the sig on the base you can see the bubbles in it as well!!
Excellent - now we just have to find a match. Stupidly I didn't peer too closely at the signature yesterday as the lighting wasn't great and I didn't want to seem too interested. I just know it said Hadeland but couldn't see if it said anything else.

Flat plate here like yours - apparently 1960's ish
and it also has the teeny tiny bubbles in if you enlarge the first picture - ooh that's exciting
so quite probably Willy Johansson for Hadeland for yours :)

getting close doesn't it.
-
Not sure how similar this linked tray might be, but at least provides a possible that yours might have been a 'console tray'
http://www.antiquehelper.com/item/326276
m
-
That is VERY similar - but there are a few differences. Pontil mark, iridescence. But shape, colour and size are accurate.
Thank you for being so alert.
-
welcome:)
so I suppose if yours might have been a tray to a set, then it's possible that there may be candle holders or a bowl or similar to find to match your tray. Given the creation of the glass and the finish on your piece, is it out of the question/unlikely that it could be from Murano?
m

Nothing would surprise me.
-
Ivo this is a Daum bowl
It says it's pate de verre
http://www.antiques.com/classified/Antique-Glass-/Antique-Crystal/Antique-Daum-Ltd-Edition-Designer-Covered-Pate-de-Verre-Bowl-
looking at the close up it does have similarities.

Not entirely sure if this is relevant but on searching something else I came across this flat tray item by Arne Jon Jutrem for Hadeland. Thought it might be worth adding a link in case it leads to something to id Ivo's piece
https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/85556-large-hadeland-50s-platter-greenland-s
I think it possibly should have a smaller bowl with it like this one
https://www.chairish.com/product/867107/arne-jon-jutrem-for-hadeland-glassverk-greenland-series-bowl-and-underplate
It may be completely unlinked to Ivo's piece but just in case ;)
