Hi everybody,
There is an interesting PY fake on sale on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300851482328?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I had already warned the seller that it was a fake and the auction has now been cancelled (with a nice message from the seller).
However, I thought that I should post this item on the GMB as it is (IMHO) a particularly 'good' weight. Also, I have never seen a star pattern millefiori fake before. Is it as unusual as I believe?

Any opinions?

Mod: Two topics on the same weight now merged
I had advised the seller of its status as had Sophie (see above) and maybe other folk had too.
The listing has been ended.
Wow that is very garish.
The colours in the photos are probably over-enhanced.
... new batch lol
I do not think it is out of a new batch.
Also, I have never seen a star pattern millefiori fake before. Is it as unusual as I believe?
I have an example of one and I suspect there could be several around but perhaps not as many as other patterns.

Kevin, thanks for the info.

The pedestal I posted a week or so back has a hollow ground and it is legit.

Hi Kevin,
Many thanks for posting a picture of your fake...
I really like it.

There is also a Paul Ysart fake on eBay with nice pictures and a dropped and 20 ribs or cog around the PY cane:

I wonder what the costs to the maker(s) of these fakes were in reproducing the Paul Ysart canes? Presumably moulds had to be produced which can't have been cheap? Did they actually make much profit before the fakes were recognised?
Although this wouldn't have applied to the lamp worked ones.

Hi Nick
The fakes were made in a glasshouse somewhere which would already be equipped with the necessary moulds. Looking at the weight in question the complex canes for the garland are very simple and it looks as if they have been constructed just using one simple star mould which every glass house would have. Likewise the cane in the centre of the flower - very simple.
Re the lampwork - there are just three cased canes used to make the lampwork brown, blue and green and it would take a lampworker no more than 5 or 6 minutes to make the lampwork for a PW.
So special material costs zero. Two glassworkers would be able to turn out a minimum of 6 an hour - possibly 8 or 10.
Best regards

Hi Derek!
To make glass you need yet so few: workshop, materials, tools, and above all energy.
For one working day of 7 hours are for sure the cost will be $ 100.
The labor costs for two workers for 7 hours are: 2 workers x 7 hours x $ 30 / hour = 420 $
Altogether about 550.- $ !
Or 412.- Euro.
Or 350.- British Pound.
Does it make sense to make a Paul Ysart Fake?
Where is the profit ?
-
Hi Casalibra
The fakes were made in the 1980's - 30 years ago in a/some glasshouses
that had all the tools and raw materials - I doubt that production of the fakes
was done full time - more likely a couple of glassworkers slipped back in the
evenings after their normal days work and put in 2 or 3 hours making them.
Even using your current day figures, in 7 hours they could make 50 - 60 fakes
so the mastermind of the scam would get the fakes at roughly £10 a fake for all
materials, heat and labour. Certainly worth while when KNOWN Ysart fakes are
regulary selling on E-bay for over £100, a profit of £90 per fake sold or using
your figures £4500 - £5400 per days production !! And if the weights were not
immediately exposed as fakes as happened when they first appeared then the
profit would be 4 or 5 times these figures.
Best regards
Derek

Mod: Three posts have been removed from this thread. The first of those queried who made the fake py weights and made reference to initials of people. The second two posts were basic responses which, without the initial post, no longer have relevance.
Any post naming, or suggesting, in any way, actual people without full context and reference to proper proofs contravenes the Board guidelines.
Discussion of any fake item (of any type) should always be kept to known details regarding the items and any attempt to name, or suggest names, without absolute proof will be edited or removed entirely.

Thank you Kevin, thats how it should and must be.
The fake flower and garland on ebay at the moment is certainly a fake but its unusual for incassetanero to get it wrong. Regards Roger

The description when translated actually says it is a fake btw :)

But the title of the listing for the garlanded flower weight still says "Paul Ysart paperweight / Large and rare". ::)
-
Well like most sites it is not possible to change the title only add to the description, or cancel the auction.

I wonder who would have bought the fake PY at £500 + , perhaps somebody who could afford it and wanted to do research on it???? Its a lovely weight, why not change the info and sell it anyway..
