hi guys
i mentioned this paperweight in a post about murano and i did think it may be possible that this is murano or even chinese i bought it thinking it was firstly a little different and from strathearn but im thinking its not,any thoughts please?

I have one or two vasarts and they are quite different to this one thats why i was thinking it could be possible to be
murano etc, this might be a novicey question but is it possible to date the weight by design?

Hi Joe
Its quite difficult to tell Vasart and Strathearn apart as Strathearn was
effectively Vasart under a new owner. Same workers, same factory, same
tools, same canes. Here are some clues to help you tell them apart..............
Vasart weights usually have the canes thast are raised above the
ground and apart from the very late ones have the rough ground base.
Strathearn weights have a fire polished base and the canes are flush
(or nearly so) with the ground.
The base photo of yours shows the rough grinding and the canes are
raised above the ground so its a Vasart.
Murano weight bases are invariably flat ground and polished.
Re telling the date from the design - not possible I am afraid. The designs
were set up on the plates by the glassworkers wives and a few others and
they were free to design what they could with the canes that were available.

The canes are all Scottish and very likely Vasart Ltd (1956-1964) but could be older ones from the Ysart Brothers period or even pre-war Ysart.
The general design with twist canes laid as lengths between basic canes in an outer row is known from both the Ysart Brothers and Vasart Ltd periods. But it is much less common than standard cane garlands. And the geometric setting of the inner canes is also less common than the usual concentric designs.
This one is possibly the first I have seen (I have a vague memory of another) with a garland that has two "rows" of twist canes betwen single millefiori.

Thankyou for the added info i did think it was different but that was because of the okra yellow colour of the base and i was once told to always buy an item regardless if youve not seen one before also i did think that the bottom had been polished or cut flat or would it have always been that way?

The grinding on the bottom is to remove the roughness where the pontil iron was cracked away from the glass. The way a base is finished can be a clue to where and when an item was made
