Title: Beranek glass identification, patter, maker etc. help required
Post by: stanleyxxxx on February 03, 2013, 09:17:51 PM
Dear ALL, I have joined this forum to get your help in identifying a piece of Czech glass I personally think is stunning. It makes my stomach wobble when I view and handle and especially in certain lights. I need to know more about this Beranek piece. Can anyone help me please. New user stanleyxxx

I'm struggling to compress my images and I will happily PM you with the pictures. Sorry tech doughnut.

Hello Stanleyxxxx and welcome to the GMB. :)

Here is some information about resizing pictures: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,34093.0.html
Maybe it'll help.

New Czech glass is always welcome at GMB! If you open an image with software like Irfanview and save it as another file, specify the file size when you do it, 100KB and that should be OK for uploading here. (I am not particularly handy with technology either),

Hi again,

I've managed to resize two pictures, but I'm afraid I was standing in the wrong queue when they were handing out technical wizardry -- the photos are now a bit on the small size. :-\

Very interesting vase, but I don't think I've seen it in any catalogue or website. Hopefully someone will be able to help out.

There are three or four designers who may have done a design like this at Beranek, including Havelka who also designed later at Princ. Vases by Kolbabek bear some similarities too. I am quite surprised it is not signed with their name on the base, as this was quite commonly done by factory workers, usually in capital letters to tell the owner of the piece who it was by. This was definitely designed after 1994, likely even after 2000,  which is when the available records become sketchy unfortunately. But not impossible. The factory is now closed but the old website can be located and still visited via an internet search. http://www.refinex.cz/bg/ Also, try a search of http://www.cs-sklo.cz/ceskoslovenskesklo/ run by Jindrich, an English speaker who is a friend of GMB, a site for general CZ glass pleasure... A high quality ultra modern style vase from a historic factory......

I can't add too much as it's not a piece I've ever seen before. I'd add in Jan Konarik as a possibility. It's a sort of Exbor/meets Skrdlovice type piece.

If you can take it to one of the National Glass Fairs, Cambridge next I think, quite soon, there is a dealer who stocks a lot of Contemporary Czech who goes there quite a lot, his details may be on their website for floorplans etc... He may well be able to firmly place the designer of this complex piece,

Thanks to you all for your feedback and compliments (Sue).
I have just measured the vase and it stands 28cm tall 12cm @ widest point and it weighs an incredible 4.25kg.
Here's my dilemma; I am not a collector but could be tempted now after experiencing a piece like this. I understand now how you guys are so passionate as these are really tactile gorgeous pieces of glass and if I had a collection they would display brilliantly. Back to dilemma; we foster young children and everything seems to get broken hence I am selling my collection of Liberty & co pewter etc. I cannot display the vase as per the above although I would for sure if we were kid free. So; do I sell it? If so where? (ebay maybe) Does it have any significant value? .... I want it to be enjoyed otherwise it will be wrapped and hidden away for years. Advice please

ooh, put it up somewhere high, and enjoy it. Let the kids you're fostering enjoy it too!
Nothing wrong with learning a little art appreciation - in fact, it's a real bonus. :)

Hi Sue, Thanks for geting in contact again ... what is high? I really do not know values ...
The money would end up going to the kids in the summer holidays but is it an ice cream, funpark day or mini break? LOL

I meant high up on a top shelf - so it would be safe!
I really would not know about value at all. I would suspect, as it is relatively recent, that it would not, at the moment, achieve the sort of price it probably should do in the current secondary market.
So it would most likely raise enough for ice-creams, with extra flakes and raspberry sauce.
I think "funpark days" are very expensive, are they not?

Got yer .... I don't like funparks anyways. Thanks and its high up now and will remain there.
