not really sure what I've bought... About 7.5" - 190mm tall, and the narrow end (top in pic) has been ground/polished and shows a fair amount of wear. Rim at wider end also shows some wear but hasn't been cold finished in any way. The waisted part shows substantial slice cutting, othewise the rest is moulded. Glass isn't that bright and there are several black seeds, and is hollow completely through the centre. Wondered if it might be the pedestal to a ham bone plate, or maybe a cake plate of sorts. :-\
thanks for looking and all thoughts welcome :)

I always assume these are for displaying shoes in shopwindows.
-
thanks Excuse the joke......................might that be for Cinderella's glass slipper ;)
Must admit I don't recall seeing shoes balanced on a glass pedestal, but you may well be correct - and if not shoes then perhaps some other shop window goods.
Let's see what others might think :)

HI ,
A Pineapple stand maybe ?.
cheers
Peter.

hello Peter. I assume you are implying a C20 greengrocers stand for display in a shop window etc. - rather than something to do with ornate C18 Irish pineapple holders with their massive Van Dyke type rims.
Could be very wrong, but age wise I'd consider this to be pre 1930/40 - the colour is very slightly greyish, and there are too many small stones to suggest that, quality wise, this is a modern piece of glass - although stones apart it's not a hurriedly cobbled together piece.
I think the suggestion of a support (for articles of some kind) within a retail (shop) environment to be quite probable. :)

Hi.
Not implying a greengrocers object at all , not everyone could afford the type you refer to so maybe this 1 is a more affordable variety for an aspiring table .
cheers ,
Peter.

thanks.

I now have £2 invested in this venture - one quid for the glass and another for a Tesco's pineapple - so, for all pineapple lovers wherever you are.............. :)
-
brilliant - that works, now can you balance a pair of Jimmy Choo's on there to see if that will work? ;-)
-
Great picture......didn't think I needed a pineapple stand, but not so sure now. :)

I have now discussed this with the the V. & A., and they have confirmed their agreement that this has its origins in the C19, somewhere. However, they didn't recognize the shape and were unable to help with it's exact use, although they agreed that a stand, or as a part of some more complex unit was a possibility. So, if anyone else has any bright ideas............ :)
As usual my sincere thanks to the Glass department at the V. & A. for their time.

Over here it would be considered a shelf support. Many older retail establishments would use a pair to support a thick glass shelf where a wide variety of merchandise could be displayed. We have them in most of our antique malls.
-
o.k. - sounds workable - would the practice have extended back as far as the mid C19 do you think?
-
Over here they are called shelf risers & have been in use since the 19-teens. Not certain about an earlier date. I believe they were manufacturered using the 3-4 day tank furnaces rather than the freestanding pots since they were mass produced commercially. I've seen many variations, some round like yours & some that uses a + shaped top for added stability.

many thanks, and certainly a possibility - I will need to look further into this potential use :)
