Title: Need info on Val St. Lambert vase
Post by: Alton11 on February 18, 2013, 01:12:39 AM
Stands almost 11 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Signed on the bottom in script Val St Lambert and underneath that, either P.U.? or R.U?
Have seen same signature on auction sites for vases they claim to be from 20s/30s but cannot find this particular design. was hoping someone here might be familiar with this particular vase. thnx for looking.

Might try looking through the catalogs & the signature section.

Hello everybody,

Sorry to just barge in, but i did not see a page to introduce myself.

I'm here to learn more about non-european glass, and sofar i allready have seen several names/brands that don't mean a thing to me  :D.

I am a little familiar with VSL though, living in Belgium and i can say that the initials 'PU' stand for pièce unique, which translates in unique piece  ;D

This doesn't mean that you have got the only one in the world, it is just that it slightly differs from an existing model.

Hope this helps and i am looking forward to learn and participate here.

Anne.

Well done Anne, it worked fine.  8)

You can add up to 4 separate images to each post, and if you have more than 4 for a topic just reply to the post and add another 4, and so on. We find that if you make the longest edge about 800 pixels then save for web the resulting image is big enough to see clearly and small enough to fit our limits. :)

Just for what it's worth, i heard this funny story today from an engraver at VSL, and we ended up talking about these PU signatures.
i have always thought that it was a special design, slightly different from the registered one, which makes it different from the rest and quite special.

He tells me this...imagine an engraver at work, and suddenly, for instance he has to sneeze...and by accident moves the item he's working on, in the wrong direction, which ends up in an error in the design. The piece then had to go back to the drawingtable, to have the design slightly altered or  redisigned to hide the error.

So once again, it is different from the registered design, which makes it sort of unique,  but not by choice!  :D
