We have talked about this book for so long - and finally the first of a four book Trilogy about Pirelli, Bimini and Komaromy glass has been published as an ebook on Amazon.
If you search for London Lampworkers on Amazon.co.uk (or Amazon.com if you are in the US) you will see it.
At the moment you can buy it for 1.95 (pounds) or US$2.99 but if you wait until the weekend I have arranged that you can get a copy free (from Saturday until Monday night).
We need feedback so that I can correct any errors. I have already found a formatting error and one vase that I have called a decanter!! Please put feedback about errors here on the Message Board so I can correct them. Positive feedback that you like the book would be more than welcome on Amazon.
I hope you are going to enjoy this book, and the rest of the Trilogy that will follow.
-
Looking forward to it!
-
I've been privileged to see this pre-publication and it makes fascinating reading. I can't wait to see the rest of the trilogy. :)
-
Thanks Nancy and Anne - I'm biting my fingernails on this first day of publication, hoping people are going to like the book. So its really good to hear from you.
What I should be doing is getting on with the next book, which will be the one on Pirelli. I have a huge number of photographs and lots of really interesting information that hasn't been published before and we are about half way through that book. It shouldn't be too long.
I'm still receiving photographs of Pirelli figurines with labels -people have been great. If there are any more out there - I'm here waiting and they really will be appreciated - angelabowey@xtra.co.nz
Thanks again, Nancy and Anne. I really need the encouragement just now.
-
Angela, I have some stuff to send you, including some photos, so please remind me if you've not had them by the weekend. :)
-
A small point of pedantry: how many parts are there, as
a four book Trilogy
is impossible... Four parts would be a quadrilogy.
-
Ahhhh but if it's good enough for Douglas Adams... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Adams ;)
-
That's not uncommon, but they start off as trilogies that Topsy. And it doesn't answer the question.
-
Hi Christine and Anne,
There are four books in this Trilogy. I want to call it a Trilogy and not a Tetralogy nor a Quadrilogy, partly because I like the word and partly because its a bit eccentric and I always longed to be eccentric.
I just watched a youtube video of Carson Taite asking Lea Santos's why she called her four book series a trilogy and Lea explains: "because it's wrong, and that makes me happy".
And then there's this from Wikipedia: "Richard Wagner's epic series of operas, Der Ring des Nibelungen, is sometimes referred to as a trilogy even though it consists of four works: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. The first work, Das Rheingold, is shorter than the other three, running a bit over 3 hours, while all the others are over five. "
And my first book is shorter than the other three.
Usually, as Christine says, a trilogy that has more than three books gets that way because more were added later - as in Isaac Asimov's Foundation trilogy, or Douglas Adam's Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I hope you can humour me and let me call our four books a Trilogy.
And most important of all, of course, please read the first book and let me know what you think.
All the very best
Angela

You can call it what you like, but people like to know what they're expecting ;D

Hello Angela,
I have installed Kindle (with help from Anne!) and am ready and waiting!
In the meantime I have read the 'taster' on Amazon, and my apetite has been whetted!!
Can't wait for the rest to follow..... :)
-
That is great,
I am so excited about all this.
Anne, you are a wonder at these technical things. Quite a few people have said they don't have a kindle including my son. A few tips on here about how to download the kindle reader into a computer would be good. Anybody?
Meantime I have all my fingers and toes crossed that people read and like the book.
lots o luv

This is the link I used Angela, there is a different one for Apple users, but if you go to Amazon, they give you easy peasy instructions... even I can do it!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/kindle/pc/download
Hope that is all correct Anne... I can't find the bit of our conversation where you told me what to do, but if I have got it wrong, feel free to correct me.
-
I'm gerring quite excited about this new book although I have to admit that my preference is always hard copy! I don't know if I said this before, but I love my Pirelli Calendar!
-
I think its available for free on Amazon now and for the next three days. Would somebody be able to check that its working OK, by going and getting a free copy. Just search for London Lampworkers and it will turn up.
Many many thanks
Angela
-
Yes, it's free and available. I have downloaded it and had a quick browse through. All seems to be in order and as it should be Angela! Lots of interesting information too! I love the sketch of the Pirelli lampworkers room with details of the holes in the floor and fire escape! Many thanks for this Angela!
-
And so have I (on a Mac) - excellent stuff thank you.

Downloaded and read with great pleasure Angela. :)
I love your writing style, and it has made up fully for being unable to go to the Glass Fair tomorrow.
Hurry hurry with the next book... and keep us all informed when it is ready.

Thank you so much Anne, for preparing all that information.
I think the information about downloading the Kindle should be put into a general sticky notice at the top of the books section, as I'm sure it will be generally useful to people.
Meantime my book is still available for free until Tuesday morning UK time, or midnight Monday in the US. I do hope that anyone who is interested in Pirelli or Bimini or Komaromy will get a copy. I'm also hoping for some good feedback on Amazon. Thank you to Al for the feedback that is there now.

Please put feedback about errors here on the Message Board so I can correct them.
Very nice book - but you asked for corrections :).
You mention Lauscha Technical College and give "Hochfachschule fur Glaskunst" as German name: "Hochfachschule" don't exist! Also note the missing umlaut in "für". The problem is that the name has changed over time. I believe it was founded as "Zeichen- und Modellierschule", later renamed "Gewerbefachschule für Kunstglasbläserei" and is now called "Berufsfachschule Glas (http://lauscha.sbbs-son.de/bfs-lauscha/)". Quite possible that other names were used at other times. "Hochfachschule" turns up a second time further down the page.
Again the umlaut: "Wiener Werkstatte" should read "Wiener Werkstätte".
Not sure about the last comment: at the end you thank several people - most of the names I am familiar with, but not Alistair McIntyre. The name jumped at me anyway, as recently a couple of paperweights offered on ebay were identified as Alistair McIntyre's work - but were made in fact by Alastair MacIntosh.
-
Hi,
Thank you so much for correcting the German. I think it will be safer if I just call it Lauscha Technical College, would that be OK do you think?
I am not sure how to do an umlaut in HTML, but I'll try and work it out.
Alistair McIntyre is a friend who sent me some photographs some years ago. Nothing to do with paperweights so far as I know.
All the best

Hi,
Thank you so much for correcting the German. I think it will be safer if I just call it Lauscha Technical College, would that be OK do you think?
Fine with me - I just feel, as long as you quote German, it should be correct :). To have the (a) German name, however, might help if a reader wants to google it.
I am not sure how to do an umlaut in HTML, but I'll try and work it out.

To the techies in the crowd, are there any apps for the Kobo, as opposed to the Kindle? I have a kobo and would love to look at the pretty pictures. If not, don't worry, I'll just download it onto my computer.
Carolyn
-
Many thanks for the help, Wuff. I think I have it sorted now.
And Carolyn, I'm very new to publishing with Amazon Kindle, and at the moment its only available on Kindle. The next stage is to make all corrections and get it published as a paperback with Amazon. I've used Kindle Direct Publishing, and because I've registered with them, it is now restricted to the Kindle for the next 90 days. By that time, I hope to have the 2nd book in the series ready. Eventually it will be on the Kobo and other systems, but in the meantime if you can download it to your computer I do hope you enjoy it.
While I'm on, I thought I'd tell you that there have been 111 downloads of the free book this past weekend. I don't know if that's good or not, but it feels good to me.
Thanks everybody.
-
You can borrow the book free if you have a Kindle. Its available in the Kindle owners lending library. So if you have a Kindle - please go and borrow the book so I can see if it works.
Thanks

Hi Angela, I just wanted to say how excited I was when I came across your new book on ebay recently- of course I purchased it straight away! I can't wait for the next three books as I have collected small glass animals since I was a little girl. I now have a collection of approximately 500. However it has evolved to other items including vessels and figurines, and I was very lucky to find a pair of Istvan Komaromy's dancing girls five years ago. I also have several Bimini animal figures, Pirelli too, as well as contemporary items from two of my favourite Venetian lampwork artists. I only have one item with a label-Pirelli- a Guinness toucan. Whilst writing you might also be interested to hear that when I was on holiday in Turkey last year I met an elderly Hungarian couple who, whilst talking about a recent trip of mine to Budapest, it transpires met Istvan and actually taught his wife Hungarian! Small world! In fact I made a special trip to the Museum of Applied Arts whilst in Budapest to see Istvan's work, but there was none on display and, when I asked where they were, no-one knew anything about it! Anyway I just wanted to contact you about the book and, if you would like a photo of the Pirelli item please let me know. All the best, Lisa
-
Hi Lisa, welcome to the board. :)
We'd LOVE to seee any pictures you have!
However, I am a little worried that you have used your email adress as your username - we don't normally recommend folk put their email addresses on the board, unless they're disguised in some way, in order to prevent them getting harvested by spambots (I think I'm getting my terminology right :-[ 0 ).
It's for your own protection. :)
I'm going to report this post to a moderator, to see if we can't get this fixed for you. But you'll probably have to come up with a username to use instead. I don't think it's going to be a simple matter of disguising it, as it is your username. You may hear from a moderator asking for an alternative name to use.
Don't worry about it! :)
-
Lisa's profile sorted for her and email sent to explain why and what. Thanks for flagging it up for us Sue. :)
-
Thanks, Anne. :-*
I hope we've not frightened Lisa away!
-
No, you haven't frightened me away! I have been taking photos of some of the items mentioned; Pirelli Guinness toucan (although this item looks too new, but it has a label on it), some of my Bimini pieces and the two Komaromy dancers . I hope the pictures come through OK. Lisa :)
-
Some more Bimini pieces. Lisa :)
-
Thank-you so much for all your trouble taking and posting the images to share with us, Lisa.
You have rather a lovely collection of some very scarce and wonderful glass - just one of those pieces would be amazing to own - you have a zoo! ;D
(To me, homo sapiens is just a.n. other animal. I don't have delusions of grandeur over other species. ;))
-
The Pirelli book (book 2 in the series) is now available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1484086309
-
Lisa joynes - you posted a picture of a Pirelli-labelled Toucan with a pint of Guinness. I would very much like to see a larger picture of it. Is that possible? You have a beautiful collection - love your Komaromy dancers.
Best wishes
Angela
