Hi Steve, it's Mtarfa (Malta).

If you put 'Mtarfa blue vase' into google and look at images,  you will see a couple like yours with the same mark on the base,  and this also gives you an opportunity to see a different way the studio marked their glass with MTARFA in capitals.
This may come in useful for another day, another find.

Not sure how long this image will be viewable but here is a labelled example: Google Image (http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Mtarfa-Glass-Vase-Signed-and-Labelled-/00/%24%28KGrHqMOKm4E5BWNNhcZBOVrC429uQ~~60_35.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mtarfa-Glass-Vase-Signed-and-Labelled-/230911694512?pt%3DUK_Art_Glass%26hash%3Ditem35c368d6b0&h=300&w=200&sz=15&tbnid=FMNlMIivNgnOVM:&tbnh=95&tbnw=63&zoom=1&usg=__Gr8QWLO7RYddfZv8NxVHSU-oW8Y=&docid=QhtJRboC-ENIHM&itg=1&hl=en&sa=X&ei=m48mUbrOGumx0QXuh4CACw&ved=0CDoQ9QEwAg&dur=1467)

Why should you think that it is no longer a "gem" because you now know the maker?  :) ;) :)

I'm tot being rude at all - I just think that, as your first impressiom was that it might be a gem, why should it change?
(Obviously, no longer a hidden one.)
I think a great deal of Mtarfa is highly under-rated and that it will be considered to be a highly desirable gem of a maker in its own right in the future.   8)
