What does anyone think of the attribution of this butterfly paperweight? (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5574631383&toolid=10001&campid=5336261829&customid=&icep_item=321081508616&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229508&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg). I have my doubts.

Saw this myself last night on there, looks fake to me, even without the PY canes which look to be two colour with a dropped yalthough the image isn't too clear the quality just isn't there to me.

Same here. Trouble is its already attracted 15 bids. I have sent the seller a message questioning whether its genuine etc.
-
I have advised the seller of the common clue to these weights - Yellow/Orange "p" and Pink "y" in the signature cane, and pointed to ysartglass.com fake py section for examples.
-
Thanks Kevin. I said much the same to the seller and pointed him/her to the same website. I've had a polite reply claiming complete lack of knowledge and saying it will be looked into.

Same seller has now listed 2 more Paul Ysart fakes!

The listing says;
"From the collection of 800 paperweights collected by the late Ramon More" and "more to come".
The "fakes" are collectable in their own right - could it be that Ramon More knew this, but the seller doesn't?

Hi Nick. I see the seller is Lincolnshire. I was told that the first batch of fakes appeared at one of the Newark Antiques Fairs, and a lot of people were taken in by them. Maybe Ramon More bought them there?

Does anybody from the papwerweight afficionados around here know of Ramon More or his collection?
-

Hi Sue.
Not a name I know....but...I think there are quite a few paperweight collectors out there who are not know to many (or any?) other collectors, some with fantastic collections.

;D
It must be very lonely collecting without other collectors to share and appreciate collections with. Sharing with others who appreciate it is the greatest joy of collecting - making friends with similar afflictions to yourself!

Hello Alan, the first listing contains: "RARE PAUL YSART BASKETWORK AND BUTTERFLY PAPERWEIGHT", the others
have "PAPERWEIGHTS SIGNED WITH PY"- this makes a small but important difference, I think!
kind regards Erhard

Hi Erhard.
I agree - the first advert misleads the bidder, but the others let the bidder mislead themselves!
Alan
-
Hi Alan,
yes!! that's true- the next big exit from those misleading highways sound like "Please decide for yourself, I am not a paperweight expert" -
I am astonished how many fake PY weights have surfaced recently (also in Germany)- some with "correct" "fake" attribution, some without...
kind regards Erhard

I remember a time before kids and school fees when i could get to Swinderby (for those that do not know, it is a huge antique fair close to Newark and in Lincolnshire) and had money to spend. Probably nearly 10 years ago, and there was a man there selling PY weights. However, I think he was not passing them as genuine, but as "fakes". He told a story of having bought many of them some time previously believing them to be genuine. I think they were reasonably priced. I should have bought some!
I googled Ramon More but nothing obvious came up.

aha
Seller also listing a John Deacons
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LIMITED-EDITION-JOHN-DEACONS-SEAHORSE-PAPERWEIGHT-MARKED-1-1-see-pics-/321082357510 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LIMITED-EDITION-JOHN-DEACONS-SEAHORSE-PAPERWEIGHT-MARKED-1-1-see-pics-/321082357510) as coming from the same Ramon More collection
in the description for this it states
"It was designed by David More and made for his grandfather who owned the Birches Hotel in Crieff in Perthshire, Scotland"
That is an interesting geographical connection!!
A cursory search shows the hotel being on the market in 1984 and currently being a care home. So if the owner pre 1984 was Ramon More he would have been well placed to amass a good collection
-
And another hope the original owner didn't buy all these at genuine Paul Ysart prices

Hi.
If the collection belonged to a hotel owner in Perthshire, as indicated above, then perhaps he got them in Scotland, maybe direct from the maker?
Alan
-
Hi Alan
Could be I suppose, the quality of the vase and flowers in this latest one is pretty bad, I'd be surprised that anyone that knew Paul's work thought it was genuine.

The plot thickens - the butterfly and other listings by the seller mentioned above have mysteriously been removed from ebay. Wonder why? ???
-
***
Hi. I think that if the seller ends the auction early, that is what you see as a message on eBay; and that if the item vanishes, then eBay have removed it for whatever reason. (For example: item contravenes permitted item rules; or seller has committed an offence such as shill bidding which can result in temporary or permanent suspension).

Just out of interest, here are pictures of my two PY Butterfly paperweights. The first is a type 1 fake C1988 with the dropped Y and the second on the spattered ground is a type 2 fake C1992 with spaced letters
Dave
-
Well they're being listed again, 5 currently listed, not claiming tom be Paul Ysart but just listed as with a PY cane here's one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STUNNING-WHITE-AND-GREEN-BASKETWORK-AND-FLOWER-PAPERWEIGHT-WITH-PY-CANE-/380609474713?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item589e17b099 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STUNNING-WHITE-AND-GREEN-BASKETWORK-AND-FLOWER-PAPERWEIGHT-WITH-PY-CANE-/380609474713?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item589e17b099)

I have been looking at the weights and have to admit that I have trouble seeing which one is fake apart from the PY with a large gap and which ones are real. I have not handled any but like to keep an eye open for them. The fakes as it has been said are collectable in their own right and they look good to me. The seller is trying to deceive by giving himself a 'get out' clause. Hopefully the collectors can read the listing and act accordingly.
The last time I as at Newark I was marching around on the Parade Grounds and wasnt allowed to walk anywhere for 6 weeks !! ;D
