Any ideas on the age and origin of this jug would be appreciated. It is fairly large and substantial at 21cm, the handle almost seems a little crude compared to the rest of it.
I don't think the colour variation was achieved through heat striking and wonder if the process was more akin to that sometimes found in rubina verde items - the blowing and bursting of a secondary bubble, in this case almost a cranberry. Tried to show that in the two photos in the following post.

Ahem.. :D
-
That's mica in it, right? :)
It's just it looks like gold foil until you enlarge all the pics and can then see that it's odd shaped particles that only look gold because of the amber casing.
Rather a spectacular jug!

My thought would be late 19th/early 20th and good Bohemian, but that's based on gut
-
Thanks Sue and Christine, late Victorian and Bohemia would have been my guess too. Bohemia because of the mica but presumably it was not exclusive to the region.
-
So; we're not getting too far with it are we? ???
- 3 sets of guts which agree on a vague date and a wide, but confined area... and I'm sure you didn't really need Christine's and my guts' feelings to confirm your own.
Sorry, John.
It is stunning though. ;D

I live in hope but then you have to be realistic too. ;D
It is not the sort of item I would expect a definitive ID for but nice to have an idea of age and a possible region. Plus, as you say, it makes for some pretty photos.
-
It would be fabulous and suitably festive on a christmas dinner table. :)
-
It reminds me of the Czech lamps with the mica in probably just because of the combination of a diamond/quilted effect and the mica. I've never come across anything like it before. My guts would go with Bohemian but were they great producers of Amberina type effect glass?
or did the US use mica? Maybe it is American?
I really love the effect, it reminds me of a beautiful fish.

It looks like a quality maker. Have you checked for faint marks?
-
with talc? It does help.
-
Nothing that I can spot. There is plenty of wear that forms a thin ring around the outer edge. The handle glows a faint green under UV so manganese is present.
-
Is there a connection to the lamps?

It is that lattice again...

My memory isn't as good as it was :o who was the Bohemian maker who made all those mold blown bobbly globe shaped vases / tall big oval shaped vases with the same type pattern as the jug? I used to have a large turquoise version of one of those vases.
Just wondering if there is any link between that mold design and the jug I suppose.

Borske Sklo? All I can think of...
-
yes that's the one.
However, just realised they were mold blown and cut from the top - no pontil marks afaik, so probably not Borske Sklo as an option.
