Title: suspect signiture?
Post by: lucyw on April 24, 2006, 05:46:30 PM
Hi,
can anyone tell me if this signature looks a bit suspect or is ok?

It is on the bottom of a lovely glass shark. The pic of whole piece can be seen in the glass forum under the title 'my haul'

Thankyou

Since I'm not sure who the signature is supposed to be, I doubt it is fake.  Do you know what it says, besides "Murano"?  Can you post a pic of the whole piece?

From your photo, the first word appeas to be "buttoso" or something like that.  If it just says "toso Murano," then I agree that you should be suspicious.

Laura,
I am not sure who's the signiture is supposed to be , hence me posting it here!?!
I thought it may be B.Toso however the double 't' shape has me puzzled.
The other word does appear to be murano, hence, again, the choice of this forum.
I did say that there is a pic of the full piece on the glass forum but here it is again in case you couln't find it.

Thanks Lou.

Ah well,
I am so happy with this piece that it matters not-a-jot really, I just posted a pic of it in the glass forum and someone said they thought the signiture looked 'a bit suspect' so I thought I would ask you guys.
I spoke to the lady I bought it from again. She paid £35 for it back in the sixties and was supposed to pass it on to her brother. It is a sad story really becase he died before she did. She promised her nephew then that he could have it when she died, but he also beat her to it. She knows I have always wanted it and would cherish it so now it is my resposabilty to pass it down though my family. Thought it might be nice if I had more info to pass along too.
Sharks are very special to me, as is glass. What could be more perfect? Plus this is the first one I have seen that is even close to being anatomicaly correct.

Hi

I think the hand etching says 'B & Toso' (it's not a double 'T' it is '&') then 'Murano' alongside - I have had a look at a few etched Barovier & Toso marks and they can be pretty 'all over the place' - also see Ivo's A-Z.

With pieces I have looked at the Barovier&Toso often melds into a scribble, that uncovers my reservation - your lovely item says B & Toso - all the items I have looked at are fully signed Barovier & Toso. Anyone able to answer this, 'B & Toso' ever used?

As to the object, not knowing the full range of Barovier & Toso designs, I would say your shark/fish is within range.

This is just my opinion.

Any chance of a photo of it standing upright, I mean on it's foot at a short distance?

Hi Adam,
She is a pretty shark isn't she! Here's a pic of her upright.
http://i4.tinypic.com/10yga6c.jpg
As you can see, she stands 14 inch high, she weighs 5.6lb.
I am madly in love with her, and she has pride of place on the windowsil.
Many thanks for the input.

Hi,
I try in this way B?tt?ro...
I think that the name is "Buttaro". It isn't a the name of a famous glassmaker, but it is a very common name in Venice and Murano.  I don't remeber exactely who he is, but I remeber a Buttaro making glass...

Ciao

Alex,
Thankyou, I will try that, it does look like "Buttaro" or maybe "bittoro"? My main problem with it is my husband held it first and said " that looks like it say B.Toso" Which tends to give you a preconceived idea of what you will see. There is nothing like a fresh pair of eyes!
Many thanks
