Title: Candlestick pair, Murano?
Post by: brain_11 on April 01, 2013, 03:42:26 PM
This is an interesting one: a pair of candlesticks, slightly iridescent, one depicts a male the other a female figure. Pontil mark on the bottom.
Size:39cm

Just bumping these as I've happened upon them twice in the last few days :)
I'm going to show my ignorance now but ( in my defence it is quite difficult to see the faces) don't they both have beards?
I was idly wondering Japanese for some reason, possibly the base - but only idly wondering, I've  never seen anything like them.  I think they are fantastic.

Japanese? Interesting idea.
You are right about the beards, so forget my original email when I described one as female figure.
Here is a close up of the faces.

I've had another thought  :)
the faces look the same on both but the costumes are different right?  I had a Madonna figure where iirc it was thought the face had been supplied as a mould but the costume and the glass used to create the figure were 'freehand' as it were.
I wonder if these are in a similar vein maybe?  The base on the Madonna was polished flat but I guess that will depend on which glassmaker is making them?

I inspected the faces closely and I believe they are dissimilar. It seems this will end up in  the unresolved bin...

no, you can't give in that easily  ;D sometimes it takes months/years, before an id just 'happens'.  They are interesting and very pretty and hopefully someone will come along who recognises them or similar.

Thanks for confirming about the faces is the pontil mark polished and then the surround ground flat on the corners please?

Indeed, the pontil marks are polished and the rest ground down. I still hope someone can recognise these beauties.

I think they are completely moulded and not hot worked at all. Is the green one uranium glass? The features aren't oriental but whether that rules out of oriental orgin or not I don't know

I've remembered what the colours and that milky type looking glass remind me of  - ZBS figures
I wonder if they might be of Czech origin, but nothing else makes me think Czech.  The finger and beards, or rather they way they are stylised, remind me of Murano glass birds tails, and the base reminds me of Japanese glass pieces but I agree with Christine the faces don't look oriental at all  :-\
They are very interesting and I love the iridescent finish on them.

The whole general appearance is oriental - elongated bodies and long oval faces; the robes swirl out at the bottom in an oriental sort of way. But they could well be a non-oriental maker just making things in an oriental style.
I did notice the beard on the "lady" - but then wondered if it might be a collar ruff?
I don't think they're moulded - the hats and folds of the robes look like applied hot glass - so do the fingers.
