It's a murano paperweight, the central devil silhouette I have seen in weights attributed to Fratelli Toso and the general canes seem to be also their style. I've not seen the horse canes before though.

Hi Nick / John

The rather straggly horse silhouette turns up from time to time either singly or in groups.  But even without the silhouettes, the style of the millefiori canes indicates a typical Murano piece.  Another clue is that the canes are cut fairly short, and set relatively low in the dome as a slightly concave disc.

It is not uncommon to see on eBay facetted overlay weights from Murano with a disc of typical Murano canes floating near the base: these are sometimes advertised as 'antique French' or 'modern Baccarat'.  And, sadly, you will sometimes find rather poor fake Baccarat logos etched into the bases. The latter seem to turn up in the US primarily.

Thanks for the reply.  I was disappointed I did not bid high enough to win the auction.  Having never seen one like it it interested me.   I have purchased a couple of the Murano overlays( that were advertised as such or as unknown) and was surprised at the their quality and look , they were really nice.

Thanks again ,

John

There is some very good quality Murano work around but rather more of the mediocre to poor.
