Title: Clichy or St. Louis?
Post by: Nick77 on April 12, 2013, 10:20:25 AM
I can't decide if this is Clichy or St. Louis, as I cannot find exact cane matches anywhere. I lean more towards Clichy. Any thoughts?

Approximately 50mm diameter

Hi Nick.

My thoughts - for what they are worth are 'Possibly Clichy, possibly Saint-Louis, but maybe neither'.

Some of the canes do look rather like Clichy canes, and some rather like Saint-Louis ones, but they also bear some resemblance to those in the door knobs that are from an unknown French factory. The ones  on the outside with red and blue flooded into the grooves remind me of some I have seen in an unknown French or Belgian weight.  Also, it is a rather messy weight, and the middle ring of six canes would probably have five canes in a classic Saint-Louis design.

You don't show a side view, but the base looks to be quite wide compared to the maximum diameter for either Clichy or Saint-Louis (unless it has been heavily polished, and then the outer canes would probably vanish off the edge in the top view, which they don't).

Hi Alan
Thanks for the reply, glad it's not just me then, I've spent some time looking for cane matches on this one, I don't have a side view as it actually belongs to a friend (photos posted with his permission) who asked me if I could ID this and another weight he'd just bought. He sent me the pics just before he went on holiday and didn't send a profile view.

The other was easy a magnum sized Richardson weight, this one though...........
