Recently sold on ebay, and sufficiently rare or desirable to attract a winning bid of £771.57 !! I can’t recall seeing another example.
A figural centrepiece / flower frog in amber pressed glass with a frosted finish, depicting an Asian elephant with a mahout (driver) on its back. Stands just under 8 inches (20cm) tall. The male mahout is wearing a loincloth or dhoti. The definition of the details is not particularly good, though the details of the elephant are better defined than those of the mahout.
Oddly, the holes for the flower frog have not been punched through, in fact would be difficult to punch through due to the size of the elephant.
In excellent condition apart from slight damage to one of the turreted ‘feet’ of the base.
The base is in the same style as those on the ‘boy on the fish’ and the ‘girl on the turtle’ figural centrepieces / flower frogs, though the detail on both these pieces is considerably sharper than the elephant centrepiece.
