Hi there,
Nice to find this forum. I have been collecting Humppila glass here in Finland for a little while. I like the design and prices are pretty cheap over here. However I bought a pretty little vase in a local antique shop last week that looks like a Loetz? Its about 18cm high and 11cm it's widest point. It was very cheap so I expect it's a copy, but of course it would be good to know for future reference if it is the real thing and if not why. I am going to keep my eye out for more of the same anyway as I have never seen these across here. Hope someone out there can help me.
Thanks
Roy

Hello and welcome to the GMB. :)
I'm not somebody who knows much about Loetz although I do like it very much - this doesn't really look like Loetz to me - I think I'd suggest Steuben. But be patient - somebody here will be able to help.
It's a beautiful thing, whatever it is. :)

I think it might be Loetz. Have a look through the Loetz pages here http://www.kralik-glass.com and you may be able to match the shape and or the decor
The decor might be Loetz Phänomen Genre 2/484, or Medici

Hello Roy,
Welcome to the GMB.
Your vase appears to be an example of Loetz ca. 1900. It is a decor referred to as Phänomen Genre 2/484. It is also commonly referred to as Medici. You can see other examples of the Medici decor here:

It is a nice example, especially if it was cheap..... those are always the "nicest".
Hope this helps,
Craig
Christine and I posted at the same time.

I clearly have a lot to learn about Loetz. :-[

Hello,
Thanks to you all for the extra information.
Yes it looks close to the design you mentioned to me on your links also..
I paid €40 for it, that seems good as now I look there are some very high prices on this sort of glass it seems, but of course they have to sell to be real ones. I know forums dont usualy value things, but could you? It would be good to know what a fair price would be for similar items if I look for more as I really bought it only for the look this time.
Thanks
Roy

Craig, very true. My knowledge of older glass is woefully inadequate.
I know one small area of studio glass reasonably well and that's it.
Roy, your best way forward investigating prices would be to follow auctions for similar pieces - you should be able to find some now you know what it is called. :)
I would think that 40 euros was rather cheap for this piece you have.
-
I agree.... 40 Euros was dirt cheap as we say here..... If I found a Medici for that price I would be doing back flips over it....

I bet they'd be really careful ones, so you didn't land on it!
I can't afford to be somebody who studies Loetz or Steuben. :'(
;)
-
Neither am I sue, but I study it anyway.... :-)

I never get my mitts on bits though. And you need your mitts on bits to study anything properly. *childish pout*
-
That would likely be why my specialty area of study has shifted to Welz... :-) Plus, I find it to be infinitely more fascinating actually.....
Loetz is well documented and there are line drawings and books galore. I would rather study something that has not really been figured out to a great degree....
To me at least, studying Welz is more fun....., a bigger challenge with a more satisfying reward...
But that is just me.....
-
And why I ended up with Mdina... practically nobody else was interested in it when I started.
I do agree, though - it's good to get your teeth into something "as yet unexplored"!
The excitement of working out the MGD connection and what that was, was just thrilling. ;D
-
Thanks to you both for the nice comments and advice. I think I got really lucky here from what I see on the auction sites. I can't afford to chase these prices either:-) my little humppila vases over her cost me 10-25 euro and that's fine. It's a bit if an antiques roadshow moment to be honest, but now I am definitely hooked on glass collecting:-) Roy

I'm delighted to hear you are hooked on glass collecting, Roy!
You obviously have a good "eye" for quality and the courage of your convictions, as you bought this Loetz on the grounds of its beauty alone.
I hope we will be seeing you here a lot more in the future. :)
-
I think this bargain will take some beating, but as they say the fun is often in the chase and I am sure there are many other lovely glass collectables out there!
You may see me again sometime..but again thanks for the expert comments :)
Cheers!

Your vase is a lovely find :) very pretty.
Being able to hold and look at the glass is a part of learning about glass though isn't it (referring to Sue and Craig's conversation)?
I can't afford Loetz either, but I do have a 'small collection' now of about 5/6 pieces I've found that haven't necessarily cost the earth. And if I did find one out and about that was unrecognised, I might recognise it now - but those finds are quite few and far between really.
To me it does make a real difference in desirability, being able to hold and weigh the glass in your hand. I'm always interested when I see pics, of how thick the rim is, how thick the base is and how much the piece weighs, because then at least in my mind I can form a view of the piece even if I can't hold it. I'm generally surprised, when I do manage to buy something a bit 'special', at what it actually looks and feels like when it arrives.
By contrast, occasionally I have also been very disappointed in some items - I've built them up in my mind to be something really special and something I desire and then they arrive (or I see them at a fair or market) and realise I don't want them after all ::)
