Title: Salt boat?
Post by: Anne on April 28, 2006, 03:50:36 PM
I've put this in my Salts album as I cannot imagine what else it may have been intended for - unless as part of a trinket set perhaps?  Does anyone recognise the pattern please, or can suggest a maker / age?

Size is 5" x 1.25" and 0.75" deep, I cannot determine if it's cut or pressed but it's quite sharp on the edges, not soft and rounded. I cannot find any mold marks at all. Quality feels very good and it's beautifully clear glass.

There was a little piece of a Grimwade Crystal dressing table set which a friend who collects it could never work out - a tiny trough-shaped thing. It wasn't until an ad turned up that my friend worked out what it was: supposedly the hand mirror was to balance upside down in it, somewhat precariously. He never would have had a clue without the picture!

Anne, in fact it looks crystal cut, how about salt, pepper and mustard?

Pamela, do you mean to hold a salt/pepper/mustard? If so they could have to be very small indeed... the internal dimensions of the boat are only 3.5" x 0.75" at the widest part, and it narrows in to about 0.25" at each end internally. I do wonder if it is a salt though?

I do think you're right saying it looks cut rather than pressed though.

Anne, your first post indicated 5" - which could have been a boat for salt pepper and mustard - better retrieve then  :?

Pamela, it is 5" outside measurement from the tip of each sticky out bit on the ends - 3.5" is the inside measurements. Sorry to confuse you.

My little boat now has a big brother! Exactly the same style / shape but bigger...
