Title: Bohemian?
Post by: Roger H on June 10, 2013, 02:12:58 PM
Hi all, I'm reasonably sure this is a 1920s era bohemian weight I have just procured for myself.
The diameter is 3.65 inches and the raised ground I find one of the best colour combinations I have seen in this type of weight. There is a definite green tinge to the glass.
Anyone else have any comments as to attribution or anything else?
                Regards Roger.

Hi Roger

I would think it was a modern Czech Republic product. (So Bohemian in a broad sense, as Bohemia forms part of the Czech Republic, but not as in 'antique Bohemian paperweight', meaning from one of a small number of factories and dating to the mid 19th century).

Thanks Alan.  Well I hadn't thought of that possibility, although I seem to remember Romania were issuing good repro glassware over the last few years  I hadn,t twigged Czeck Republic were doing so on behalf of the old Bohemia. (In general, I like it,said the duke) to quote a phrase.

Hi Roger

I have posted this link before somewhere, but Beranek make (and have made for many years) a variety of paperweight styles.  Beranek catalogue (http://www.refinex.cz/bg/catalogue/default.aspx?lang=EN)

Hi Alan, when you say modern Czeck Republic what sort of period of time would that mean?

Done a little research. Czeck republic formed in 1992-93.
Cannot imagine it to be that new. Took a look at the BeranekGlassworks site which is operating now but I can see no similarity in appearance or forming?

Hi Roger.  Perhaps I should have said 'modern Czech' product, which would then cover pieces made in Czechoslovakia in the 20th century.  Some post 1945 Czechoslovakia glass is labelled 'Bohemia Czechoslovakia'. My feeling is that your paperweight is post 1945, but it is difficult to know without some hard evidence.

Yes, circa 1950 to 1960 seems a reasonable date to put on it.
    Possibly Chribska Glass????????????
