I spotted this rather large (~50cm) and expensive vase at a fair today. The dealer said it is a German, my hunch is Austrian or might be French. I am away from my books, can anyone give me a hint about this vase? There is no mark on the glass or on the metal.

The pattern on the background suggests Moser to me. Can it be?

Assume you are referring to the 'vermicular' decoration on what appears to be a reddish/brown background glass. Regret not my area remotely, but have just googled vermicular and Moser, and yes, it seems they did use this effect as a decorative feature. However, whether the factory used it to the extent that they are known specifically for this feature, I'm not qualified to say - perhaps one of our Continental contributors might know.
I believe that the vermicular effect was used by a variety of factories, not uncommonly in the latter part of the C19. Sorry this is not very helpful. :)

is the grey and purple section on it enamel?

It is olive green and burgundy red rather. The camera on my phone didn't really capture the true colours.
Yes, 'vermicular'. I believe you Paul that is the correct expression.
I believed I saw very similar vase in one of my books but since I am far away from the "printed knowledge source" for a few more weeks I turned to the "collective knowledge" for help.

The decoration on the vase reminds me of Goldberg's work (Bohemia). I've not seen the vermicular decoration done by them, however. They did much work with both silver overlay and enamels, often with the sweeping long lines noted in this vase. Goldberg decorated glass made by other companies. I would keep them in the background as a possibility.
