Title: Unidentified glass sculpture with signature
Post by: millerjo on June 30, 2013, 03:15:52 PM
Please find attached photos of a glass sculpture with a signature that was hard to photograph and read.  Hope someone recognizes.  I may be asking a few more questions as I love art glass but know little about it.  Can anyone recommend a good book to learn from? Many Thanks

That might be Mtarfa but can't be certain from your photo.

For books see what your local library can get hold of first. There is no single book that covers everything but 20th Century Glass by Andy McConnell is ok as a starter. It is out of print now and very expensive to buy, look for it on an inter-library loan.

looks a lot like some pieces made by Josh Cohen in the US. he made a lot of tables using this technique, couldn't tell the size on your piece.

Try taking the signature from a shallow angle.  It cuts out the background pattern and can often make it clearer.  I attach two photos of a Kosta Boda vase showing the effect.

I think it's Mtarfa. They did do some sculpture-y things - I've not seen a sort of square one before, but my guts were thinking Mtarfa even before I saw the mark.

Mtarfa for sure, has similarities to the intestinal vases methinks! Did they employ an out-of-work doctor or former medical student, I wonder? ;D
