I have a small glass vase which is one of my favorite pieces and have had great difficulty identifying the artist from the very simple signature which seems to read "CH2 72" or "CHZ 72" (I surmised that the "72" is the date). I've attached a picture of the piece in profile which does not show the 5/8" round opening at the top and a picture of the signature which is on the surface just above the flat bottom. The picture does not do this piece justice and the background color doesn't show too well but it is a deep ruby red and the piece is heavy. It is approximately 3.5 inches Tall and 3.5 inches Wide. This is well executed and has to be the work of someone recognized.

Gorgeous beast! Probably quite an early piece of American Studio glass, (given you are in the states!).
The decor is achieved with silver chloride - much used in early studio glass.
It might be very hard to track down the artist. Many only worked in glass for a short while, then moved on to something else.
I have a glorious piece of work by Jim Megura, whose signature was id'd by oldglassman for me here - Jim is a personal friend of his and now sells and writes about ancient glasses and bottles - I've even met him at fairs over here and was able to thank him for it personally. ;D
I'm mentioning this, in the hope that Peter (oldglassman) might see it and show it to Jim, who might be able to help!

HI ,
Jim has been asked the question , reply will be posted when received.
cheers ,
Peter.

Thanks for replying, Peter. :-*
I'm going to use this as an excuse to post a pic of Jim's fabulous work. ;D
It's one of my very, very favourite pieces of glass, it was love at first sight - it drew me from across the room. I had to open it up at an airport customs - so I got a chance to show it off to all the customs officers and belther glass at them. They were mightily impressed and interested!

Thank you chopin-liszt and Peter (AKA oldglassman).
Thanks for posting he image of Jim's work. I'm envious.
Best Regards,
Bill

HI ,
Jim has had a look and is unable to supply a name , he does not recognize the signature nor the piece which he suggests is fairly basic and possible even student work .
cheers ,
Peter.

It was worth a shot, please convey my grateful thanks to Jim. :-*
;D I have some fabulous student pieces... Pauline Solven, Annette Meech, Dillon Clarke, Wayne Filan...

Thank you all for your efforts to identify the artist. As I said before this is one of my favorite pieces but it really doesn't matter if it is from an unknown artist. I would just have liked to known who the artist was and have seen his/her other works.
Talking about student pieces. I recently found a Paula Bartron dated 1970 and have attached photos.

Recently stumbled across this piece in the attached link and wondered if it possibly had any connection to the piece at the beginning of this thread. Appreciate the signing is different, although the use of silver chloride looked to possibly have some similarities. The one in the link I gather is signed by Bob Parr.

??
May we have some more pics of the inside, and the whole bottom (etc)?
I know we are just going by a photo here, so wondering IF we could have some more. I am wondering ( and just going to throw this out there ) based on the only 2 current pics we have......Might this be pottery? Raku?
The only reason why I am saying this is because I note a one blemish on the vase pic and it looks more like a blemish you might see on Pottery. Also ??? the signature on the bottom seems a bit too white in color to be glass ( doesn't it ) and more wide, and more carved like?? ?? ?? than one would expect to find in Glass. Again -- Just saying this based upon only 2 pics
I do not know......and maybe more pics will help. One time here myself (in the beginning) I thought a piece of Glass was pottery......so it does happen. It has happened to others also, so anything is possible when only looking at a couple pics. May be wrong -- but this is a discussion board -- and never hurts to search all options.
(( Think we have Stone, and Soapstone, and other pottery pieces that looked so much like Glass in the past here on the board....... so it does happen.... ))
So again, just throwing this to the wind.......and I wear Glasses here.....LOL (getting old, old eyes ) 8)

Thank you Antique Rose for the offer to assist. Sorry it took a while to reply but we had a family member in the hospital. I understand your comments regarding the piece possibly being pottery (actually it could be taken for such without being internally lit) and realized that I did not mention that it is translucent (allowing light to pass through) and is definitely ruby red glass that has been treated on the surface. The base is perfectly flat, smooth and has a sharp clean edge around its perimeter. It was definitely blown. I have run across pieces that were difficult to distinguish between glass and ceramic until closely examined.

Hi Greg, Thanks for the link to the picture. If it isn't the same artist it seems to employ the same technique. The vase I posted is a deep ruby red glass.
