Title: ACB Biscuit Jar. Wonderful floral work. Maker? Country of Origin? Age? Help!!
Post by: obscurities on July 11, 2013, 01:24:07 AM
I am helping a co-worker of my wife's identify this glass. It was recently given to her by her aunt, and is apparently from her Grandmother. The quality of the work is very good, and quite detailed, in that even the clear ground has a leaf pattern covering everything but the pontil and base. the quality of the work appears quite nice. This was not a quickly produced piece of glass, and also has more weight to it than most biscuit jars I have handled through the years.

The glass is 5.5 inches tall and 6 inches wide near the base. the pattern shown in full in the first images repeats itself 3 times around the piece.

The mark is also shown here and I am hoping someone recognizes it. This is not really my kind of glass here, but it is a very nice example.

The rim is stamped with a mark 4 times, to the left and right of the handle swivel. It is a tree? with an F to the left and a D to the right of the tree. Likely just a metal makers mark. The rim, handle, and lid are made of brass, and do not appear to have been silver plated at any point.

Any help on this one is greatly appreciated.

TIA
Craig

It reminds me of the acid etched cameo that Webb did, though this isn't a Webb pattern. Age is probably late 1800's to 1920s/30s

Quite possibly from Val St.Lambert, Belgium. They invented this process.

Thanks Ivo......

What is the time frame for the development of this kind of work by VSL?

I looked online and found a yellow and clear biscuit jar with a different relief pattern (in the same kind of style), the same background pattern,  and brass fittings attributed to them in an old auction. (not ebay) There was no reference for the attribution. I did look online for VSL marks and found nothing like the mark on the underside of this one....

I am hoping someone will recognize the mark....... if it means anything.....

the mark could well be retail. I believe this type of work was pioneered by Ledru around 1905.

I would add that after looking at a variety of pieces by VSL in this style, and a couple of documented examples by Ledru, it seems like that is the most likely attribution for the jar. I found an example of a vase with a drawing which is attributed to him, and done in the same colors. It is a floral relief pattern with like styling.

Any additional info regarding the mark if anyone recognizes it will be great......  also info on the glass of course, especially if it turns out that the VSL attribution is incorrect....

you're welcome :)
I love these pieces - Baccarat, Val St Lambert, Saint-Louis, they all made really beautiful versions of this type of glass.  Saint-Louis did some in gorgeous lime/pear green colour.  I covet them and constantly keep an eye out ...no luck so far  ;D
